I got this email the other day, everyone konws I love zombies. I will admit I am curious as I've watched this in the past online.

Hello Artists:
My name is Mike Schneider, I am the organizer/ curator of the mass collaborative film project, Night of the Living Dead: Reanimated. After looking through over a hundred thousand works on deviant art, I am extending the invitation to participate to artists of some of the more visually interesting approaches to the themes of zombies, action and horror.

Night of the Living Dead: Reanimated is an artistic re-envisioning of the '68 cult classic. The entire movie is redone scene by scene through a cacophony of visual media by an ever growing group of international artists, illustrators, and animators. Instead of using the movie simply as a thematic springboard, the original film itself is treated as a temporal art space with works curated across the timeline. Unlike a remake, the reanimation process uses the original audio track so the dialogue, characters, and story remain completely loyal to the original film while allowing a for a wide range of visual processes and styles to be employed. Just as those things, artists have strength in numbers and with so many involved, this project allows the potential for artistic and experimental processes to be taken which would be impossible to do at any length. It's the chance to do something small which is part of something large. There is no minimum or maximum length/ amount of submission and all works submitted will be featured on the DVD releases (either in the film itself or as alternative footage in the bonus features.)

The project is licensed as a Creative Common: Collaborative Work. This means that though the film itself will be free media under fair use policies, the artists retain full copyrights over their work outside of the film. This means merchandising, shows etc is done at your discursion and you retain all profits from use or display of your artwork.

International DVDs through Wild Eye Releasing and international sister releasing companies, Digital Copy through Demonoid.com (This is the first film they officially supporting.), limited theater screenings (The Pioneer in NYC as well as numerous other grind house/ art house theaters are already promoting the project), and Gallery/ Museum Display have already been secured. Materials have already been displayed at the Museum of History and Industry [Seattle, WA], Tampa Museum of Art [Tampa, FL], Frock [Reading, PA], and Agni Gallery [NYC, NY]. Bellwether Gallery [NYC, NY] and numerous international spaces have expressed interest in future displays and there is currently a prospectus being shopped around for shows featuring the film surrounded by the original works which went into it. With all of this together the primary audience is projected in the hundred thousands.

The original film is public domain. Without a standing copyright, it is free to view, use and distribute. A reference copy can be downloaded freely from the internet archive: http://www.archive.org/details/night_of_the_living_dead . Though consent was not a factor, Romero, Russo and the (living) original cast/ crew have been contacted regarding the project. Their 'official' statement is still no comment though they have confirmed that they are all familiar with the project and are viewing the materials as it develops.

The film is being approached in rounds of submissions with the next due date being December 15th. This is not the final deadline for the project, simply a check in point for works to be collected and assembled into a draft allowing artists to see how the project is developing and which scenes are still largely opened.

Didn't read GHOUL but I've read city of the dead, Dead Sea and the rising etc. Good stuff, Keene has an interesting take on zombies for sure.

If you ever need zombie recommendations let me know. For one you need to read DEAD TIDE by steve north ( shameless plug by me )

i do like his take on zombies but all the stuff about the imprisoned demons and the waves of apocolypses and all, it had a kind of sci-fi/fantasy feel. the straight-up horror of ghoul is more my thing

he's such a great writer, though. i actually haven't read the rising. i just saw city of the dead at the book store, didn't know anything about it being a sequel and bought it. i was kinda thrown at the beginning with no intro to the characters but keene does a good enough job of establishing everything that i was able to pick up enough to get right into the book.

*wants to buy all of his other books now*

and the next time i'm at the book store, i'll look for the steve north book
