Hoods – The King Is Dead
Eulogy Recordings – EU1068 - October 25th, 2005
By Vince Levalois
I had never heard of Hoods before (Sacramento, CA), but apparently these guys have been going on strong for 10 years, producing undiluted Hardcore that truly begs to be paid attention to.
It can’t be, interesting straight up Hardcore these days is like finding the proverbial needle in a haystack, right? This is far from the tired sounds of Hatebreed, label mates Black My Heart and others of parallel lineage. Here in lies a band with purpose and power to produce a very clean sounding release that is packed with entertaining riffs and mad ass vocals, all forming a package that’ll make you want to start moshing erratically. Having suffered through multiple line-up changes, the band nevertheless has provided their fans with many releases from a myriad of labels including Breakout, Victory and Triple Crown.
There’s nothing especially new here in "The King Is Dead", and clocking in at just less than 20 minutes with 10 songs like "26 Seconds Of Hate", I’d hardly call this an album. But this is hardcore after all and any song over three minutes is to be admonished over.
The engine under the “hood” so to speak is Mike on guitar bearing same said last name. With blaring Mesa Boogie power behind him, he’s able to conjure up some tasty and forward riffery that recalls past glories of post Punk Metal days, combining the fast and furious with the slow and bludgeoning heavy. No doubt you’ll recall some S.O.D. and M.O.D., Cryptic Slaughter and the like, but with new flair and passion to deliver. Ben Garcia’s vocals are true to form and are far less annoying than the common Hardcore fair and Whiteboy Ben’s drumming is stellar for the genre.
Although highly contented by this true-to-form and great sounding CD, I wouldn’t go as far as saying that their past or future efforts have been or will be of same ilk. You can only stretch the style so far, yet I look forward to their next one.
