Hot Chicks in bands NOW ON TOUR! *lol spin off from amaranthe thread

That being said, even if it was a "PR move" does that really matter if spreads awareness to kids about breast cancer?
OK... so let me first clarify, so you and I can avoid one of our three page back and forths, that I'm sure we'd both just as soon avoid. :goggly:

If you're asking, "if they're being disingenuous, does it matter"? My opinion would be, yes, it does matter. There's a difference between people who do the right thing for the right reason, and people who do the right thing for the wrong reason. So, if this is something one of the bands insisted on, because they're very involved with the charity, than that's very cool. However, if they're doing this, because the tour moniker is likely to seem somewhat demeaning to anyone with any sort of feminist leaning, than I would say attempting to quell that indignation with a charitable offering is quite lame.

As I noted, I have no way of knowing for certain what their motivations are. Again, perhaps their motives are pure, perhaps not. I simply stated where I would place my money if wagering.

Just curious, are you connected to the tour in any way? I'm under the impression you work in the industry.

haha no. And fyi, I think it's ultimately a dumb ass tour title and a dumb-looking poster. It's sexist, appealing to dorks who would otherwise not know what a woman looks like in person, etc. But I do think it's cool that it is at least charitable so I give it props on that accord. I never said I 100% disagreed with you though holmz.

Pathetic.
As if "female fronted bands" don't already have enough stigma as being a gimmick, this takes it over the top.

I suppose kudos to the charity aspect of this tour, but this will do little for their credibility.

Since this is REVOLVER, I would assume Lacuna Coil were one of the top bands asked to be a part of this, and most likely declined.

Finally, I have no idea which girl belongs to which band aside from the IN THIS MOMENT gal, but the only remotely attractive one was the one all the way to the right (For what it's worth)

WELL SAID.

Its beyond me why any band with any female members would actually sign on to do this kind of tour. Its pandering to the lowest common domoniator. Might as well call it JIGGLY BOOBY WANKOFF METALFEST or something to that ilk. I'm all for females in metal, the more the merrier. I like look at a nice looking lady but standing on the merits of your music is what is needed. I could easily go to a strip bar I wanted to see some female shake their ass for my money.

Since the more controversial topics have already been covered:

This is labeled as a "hard rock" tour. But System Divide are opening.

What. :guh:

Also: I would actually see this if it came here (despite the grossness of the marketing) because I dug SD when they opened for Eluveitie and ITM are a really really really guilty pleasure of mine, but alas, no northeastern dates. :(

Cool. We're almost on the same page for a change. :loco:

I was temped to post that SD video in this thread! Killer band, and this is how you do the male-female vocal thing and have it not look silly. ITM also have some catchy as hell songs too imo.

Yeah, they didn't go over very well with the crowd, but Miri was really fantastic live. ITM do have some great, catchy tunes. I just wonder what they were thinking when they made "The Gun Show". D:

I would go see Sister Sin
Best Band on the Whole Damned Tour!

Actually, I really wouldn't mind seeing this tour ... if they would actually book a date somewhere on the east coast (none listed so far). I love Sister Sin! I've been really wanting to see In This Moment again for awhile (last time I saw them was on the original "Hottest Chicks in Metal" tour back in 2007), but they usually only come around on crappy metalcore/hardcore tours with 4 other bands I don't want to pay to suffer through. I've had a few people recommend that I check out Straight Line Stitch and System Divide, so this would be a good opportunity for me to do that.
edit) It honestly amazes me that people choose to focus on them and their looks/choice of clothing/make-up/whatever rather than the reason why a tour with this name exists in the first place and why it's marketed the way it is.
It exists because the "Hottest Chicks in Metal" issue that Revolver publishes out once a year is apparently always their best selling issue. It's a money maker. Their editor even wrote this all is his editor's note in one of the issues, along with the fact that they really don't even like doing the issue (except to see how much they can get the girls to strip down for the photo shoots). It's really kinda pathetic.

DemonOfTheWoods and I ranted about it a bit here a few years ago. We even ranted (like a lot of folks here are doing) about all of the "hotter" women in metal who should have been in the magazine and on the tour, but none of them are probably as well known to the general public as the bands that Revolver picks. That's part of the reason why they pick those bands. Because people already know them. Most metal listeners in this country don't have a clue who Delain or Amaranthe are. Why would Revolved pick a bunch of unknowns to put on tour?

What else can we say? Sex sells and Revolver has found a way to cash in. This conversation is about 4 years old. Hell! The whole sex sells conversation is getting pretty damn old. There are always going to be women out there that use their bodies to grab people's attention, the same way some metal bands will use gory imagery to grab attention. Eventually either people hear something they like and realize it's worth listening to, or they don't like what they hear and they tune out. Obviously people are tuning in to these bands. While we might not like all of these bands or see their value, I think Revolver is bright enough to select bands for this tour that they think will actually make them money.

I've been trying to combat this mentality (that women in metal are only pretty faces with no talent) through my work with Flight of the Valkyries for 4 years. While FotV doesn't have a huge budget to pull in a lot of big name acts at this point (something we are working on), the one thing I do hear from fans every year about our festival is our consistency in the area of quality. We may not pick the most well-known bands in metal, but we pick some of the best sounding and most hard working bands that love their fans and give a live show their all.

It really upsets me that I've tried to contact booking agents for 2 of the bands on this tour several times with absolutely no response, so while we are trying to take our festival to the next level, it's difficult to do that without some support or cooperation from the booking agents who book the next level of more popular talent from the metal scene. (There are many more well-known bands that I would love to bring in, but most are a bit out of our price range at this point.) I get plenty of contacts for bands and from people suggesting bands that are very obscure or most metalheads have never heard of, but that's not what brings in fans. OK, I guess I better stop the ranting before I jam my foot down my throat too far.
This kind of reminds me of that tour in 2007 with Lacuna Coil, Within Temptation, Stolen Babies/Kylesa/In This Moment. I don't think it had a super cheesy name though, and it was with better headliners who have had longer careers.

I just want to stress I said "kind of".
I'm pretty sure that WAS the "Hottest Chicks in Metal" Tour by the same folks at Revolver. No "kind of" needed. ;)

I think it's funny that THIS tour got the "hard rock" tag because Lacuna Coil, Within Temptation, and The Gathering -- who got tagged with "metal" -- pretty much are hard rock these days. And even though ITM are commercial, I think the "hard rock" tag even for them is rather underwhelming...

It's kind of interesting though, how ITM and Kylesa opened that tour and now they're either HUGE or, at the very least, really really hyped. If only the same extended to Stolen Babies. D:

Revolver regularly features bands like Slipknot, System of a Down, Korn, Trivium, etc....why so many people are surprised about the lack of your Delains and your Amaranthes is beyond me. It's not really to be taken seriously if you're super metal. It's a damn smart idea from the folks at Revolver to promote this tour since it'll get there name out there more than any cover shoot ever will.

I'd hope that you find the Sports Illustrated swimsuit edition to be sexist and disgusting too because it's really the same concept.

Well, it is sexist, but it's also "a man's world" and the ultimate irreconcilable truth is that no matter how feminist we can get, we're always going to be in a patriarchal alpha-male society. :)

I was really surprised when I heard their asking price initially. In their favor, they have 3 albums out, have toured extensively and seem to have been pretty well received by the more commercial side of the metal community. Given their track record, I guess booking agents are going to ask for as much as they can get. Still, their asking price seems a bit steep to me for a band that has only been around about 4 years. Maybe I'm being naive. :err:
Stolen Babies went on hiatus when their drummer joined Dillinger I believe.
That would explain why I haven't heard anything from them in awhile. Kind of makes me wish they'd get a new drummer. I really liked them.

Thanks. I guess all of us women who like metal (or want to do anything in a male-dominated community) should just give up now, because it's obviously never going to make a difference.

Or we just keep pushing that much harder to reach or goals, because this is what we love and nobody's philosophy on the way the world runs is going to make us stop trying to get people to think differently and accept that we are here to stay.

Screw the patriarchy. :Smug:

I think they're releasing a new one this year, though - they just put up a (rather silly) YouTube update a few days ago.
