Friday January 3rd
We were able to rent ”Bingen” (a relatively new venue in our hometown, Kristiansand which is located in the same building where most of the bands from our city have their rehearsal rooms) for the drum production. We believe we will use 5-6 days and then bring the production back to the studio where we recorded our first album, Jailhouse studio.
We did some sound testing of the big room and located the spot where the drums will have the best sound, including the area around the kit for ambient sound. We rig the drum kit and the drummer, Anders, put on new Evans drumheads and tunes his kit before we go through the recording schedule for the coming week.
What’s special about this album is that we haven’t rehearsed it at all. It was written during 1 week of pre production in Brown Sound Studio (Stein Roger’s studio) and everyone involved got the CD with the songs 3 weeks prior to this day.

Saturday January 4th
Mr. Hans (Jailhouse) bring his recording equipment and we bring the extra stuff we need for this part of the production (multi cables, extra microphones, stands, cables, etc). We locate a small room next to the big hall where the drums are and use this as a control room. We start rigging the equipment and go through the details concerning the sound and listen to the pre production with the engineer.
We are using 2 DDX3216 – Behringers FULLY AUTOMATED 32-CHANNEL 16-BUS 24-BIT DIGITAL MIXING Consoles and 3 8track ADAT recorders for the drum recording.
The day is spent on putting up the microphones, adjusting and positioning the close up and the ambient mic`s for the best possible sound, without using any EQ, compressors or gates, etc. We check the listening for our drummer and inside the control room and do some sample takes. We use 20 tracks including close ups and ambient microphones and feel satisfied with the sound and leave for home after a long day - because the next day will be even longer.

Sunday January 5th
First day of recording. We record some tracks to test the connections; microphones and fine-tune the kit before we start recording the first song. Guide for Anders (drums) is the pre production we did in Brown Sound Studio, in October. We brought the computer that holds the pre production and run the tracks he needs (click track, guiding guitar, bass, piano, samples, etc. depending on the song) in solo and mix that down to 2 tracks on the ADAT`s.
After that, we run the 2 tracks from the ADAT`s and he starts recording his drum tracks.
We pay attention to the strokes/beats, tempo and tuning during the whole recording process, because once this session is over, we have to take all the equipment away and it will impossible to get the same sound again, IF we had to redo some takes later on, so we try to avoid that.
First day of recording, we tape 3 songs out of 10 in total.

Monday January 6th
Anders and the rest of us are excused from work, so we can use the whole day for recording. We listen to what we taped the day before and decide to redo one song. We end the day with recording 3 new songs and are on schedule for the drum production part. Before we leave the place we check all doors and find out that the door from outside the building, leading directly into the control room with all the equipment is open and probably has been since before we started using the room. Due to extreme frost outside the wooden door bended enough for the locks to fail so we spend 2 hours trying to fix it but since its late we cant do anything but take down all the equipment and move it to a more secure room. It costs us a lot of work taking it up and down every day, not to mention the ear effort to ensure everything sounds the same as it did from the day before, but I guess its better to be on the safe side and spend a few extra hours on that, rather than coming down one day and find that the room is emptied by someone else than you…

Tuesday January 7th
Again we decide to redo a song from the day before. We tape 3 new songs and I did some last minute changes to the arrangements and song structure on 2 songs using the pre production computer. We have to transfer the new versions back to the ADAT`s and then let Anders play through the songs a few times to get a feel with the new arrangements. After that, he records them as well. I am pretty happy now that I did the adjustments even though it was in the last second – but better then than too late…

Wednesday January 8th
The second last day and like Tuesday, we start late because we all had to attend to work before starting the recordings, so we have only 4-5 hours to record. Luckily someone fixed the door so we don’t have to take the equipment down for every ended day anymore. Anders record 2 new songs and we hope that we will be able to do the last songs on the last day without any delays or problems...

Thursday January 9th
The last day of the drum production. We start recording as soon as everything is ready and controlled. 2 new songs are put on tape – one retake from the day before and the last new song.
We start moving the drums into another room with more acoustic sound and a more cold and hard ambient sound. Here we tape an intro part with some “march snare drum” feel to it and also a tribe part. The album is done for Anders part now.
The rest of us start packing the equipment and everything is loaded into the cars exactly 1 one before the alarm is automatically turned on and the last day of recording the drums end.
On Monday, we continue the production in Jailhouse studio, recording the guitars and bass.
