Don't mean to turn it into a bitching thread but work was fucking garbage today. My crew is getting split up because the foreman and a worker almost got into a fight. I'm getting put with a different crew tomorrow, predominantly climbing and trimming (something I haven't done often at my work yet - tree cutting service contracted with our local electric power board.)

Yeah I like how you can't call it the "Chinese" or "Wuhan" flu/virus anymore. I understand that different variations of this virus exist everywhere but that's literally what it is.
CT is in a semi-shutdown right now (all restaurants, bars, gyms, casinos, and movie theaters are closed indefinitely). They are recommending that all non-essential business shut down, but obviously 80% of them are still staying open. I'm coming into work every day and just waiting until people start calling in sick and freaking out everywhere, which I imagine will happen in 1-2 weeks. Stores are looted around here for some reason.... they can't keep the shelves stocked because of the hoarding. There really aren't any supply chain issues, people are just taking what should be grocery stock and moving it to their houses. Good luck finding toilet paper anywhere around here without driving for 1-2 hours and visiting multiple stores. When people are sick, who wants to do that anyway? I believe that this virus is something to be concerned about, but J. is mostly correct in saying that its just more media panic bullshit. Still, when republicans pass a stimulus bill and push the tax deadline back 90 days, then you know something serious is happening. Good luck with your job, buddy. Hang in there.
Luckily I'm in a position where we have enough food and supplies to mostly avoid the crowds and insanity. We have some savings set aside, and I'm basically ready to stay in for a month when they inevitably announce a statewide or nationwide lock-down.
TLDR; fear the administration, fear the people, and fear the hysteria before you fear the virus
The school I work for is on spring break this week, but they're extending it another week and then moving all classes online. Expecting we'll have to move as much of my department's services online as we can, and then work from home for the remainder of the semester. Thankful to have a crucial job in all of this, but really bummed for others. Unfortunately, I think we're going to see a lot of students withdraw because online is not a viable option for students who don't own a computer or have internet at home.
The grocery stores around here have mostly gotten back to normal except for the freaking toilet paper. I had a bit of a stockpile because I would always buy one 4-pack per week whether I was out or not. That stock is getting low now because I'm sharing it with my parents and brothers. Ordered some cases of flushable toilet seat liners to use as toilet paper.
Annnnd I'm bored out of my mind. Almost everything here, except for the grocery stores, is closed. There's only so much movie-watching, music-listening, and mindless-interwebbing that I can do. I'm also packing up to move, but that gets old after an hour or so.

Leaving town is forbidden except on justified emergency business. I'm fortunate to live in a small town surrounded by reasonable people. I'm hearing reports of hysteria and mildly uncivic behavior in Paris. Stores raided, people fighting over nonsense, etc. And this is just the start...

Glad you're doing okay. Should be able to shuffle this album over to you any day now... I did hear about the forms that everyone has to fill out in in France. It's kind of crazy but I understand why they're doing it. Wouldn't hurt the idiots in this country, thats for sure.
This is the problem though, this is what no one understands. Everyone in the USA thinks this is gonna blow over in a month or two at most, and that all of the restrictions are going to be lifted in April because they were originally for "only a month". We are going to be dealing with this well into the beginning of next Winter. The amount of people who will lose their jobs and the amount of companies which will go under while be astounding. There is simply one solution for this country. Universal income for the duration of this outbreak. There's no other way to keep people home, and there's no other way to keep them spending money on things other than food. On the plus side, if I haven't had to wipe out my Buy-A-House savings by the time this is over, the interest rates are going to be insanely low...

Not to be one of those I-told-you-so doomsters, but I did predict a global economic collapse on February 2nd, 2020. How did I know? Because watching the Super Bowl, they showed a commercial for the return of HUMMER. The world didn't learn its lesson last time, and I knew right then that doom was on the way once again. I said this to a few people and they laughed, but I was serious. And here we are.
I've gone grocery shopping a few times and it's fucking insane, but at least everyone is being polite. I hope that attitude remains, and that we all get through this as best we can. I still have a job and will be working from home far more often, but I don't know how long that will last. We have a shitload of orders (more than ever before in fact) but will that sustain uninterrupted? I can't even get toilet paper for the shop.
If there is one Positive of all this, I hope that the US social safety net is improved, because otherwise there will be riots. Unemployment benefits were greatly increased during the Great Recession (of which I was laid off for 1 year, dutifully paying my rent with said benefits). This time it will be more about health care costs. I don't have faith in the government, but I do in humanity. Yes, I am a fool. Just read anything I post.

Cases continue to go up in NYC--and its only the beginning. Apparently the feds are sending a hospital ship into the harbor. It's hard to get a real sense of how the hospitals are really doing here generally (bad to terrible is my guess).
Have been staying inside with the wife who is also working from home. All of our parents are elderly and in the city as well, so it's something that is always on the mind. The schools are closed, so we have transitioned to "remote learning" which will be rolled out next week. We do a lot of tech at my school already, so shouldn't be too big a change for the kids. The local grocery store was fine in the morning this past weekend--we will see how it goes this next weekend. Definitely low on snacks, which I guess is positive
P.S: Regarding the naming of the virus--it does matter. Regardless of its origin, when he keeps making a point of saying it for every single news conference it affects people. We have thousands upon thousands of ignorant people in this city just looking for any reason to attack an Asian-American. Would they been attacked anyway? Perhaps--but even if the rhetoric influences a few more individuals to be assholes, it's not acceptable.

i'm not happy with the way sweden is handling this.

our state epidemiologist is an idiot, but more importantly for literally hundreds of years sweden has had no real-world experience with wars and crises and so has no preparedness for anything. we've been downsizing our healthcare and defense to the absolute bare bones for decades and now we get to pay the price. there's going to be a lot of people dead here. mark my words. compare our death toll to our smarter neighbours (denmark, norway, finland) when this is all said and done.
like for fuck's sake we have something like 550 emergency care beds in the whole god damn country. do the math.

Well, I visit 20-30 businesses per day and deal with thousands of strangers’ dirty uniforms so it’s only a matter of time before I’m infected. I just don’t want to infect anyone around me but the incubation period is like what? 5 or so days?
I wonder how Dorian is doing seeing how he’s a nurse. The healthcare system is over their head. Hospitals are ordering 3 times their normal inventory from my company.
Also, I REALLY hope that peeps can keep a somewhat level-head through all this and not riot and loot. I live right outside of Providence and really don’t feel like dealing with that shit. RI has brought in the National Guard today so they are probably preparing for that before the governor announces a total lockdown.

Never thought I'd say this about Sweden, but your situation sounds eerily similar to what we're dealing with over here. The big difference is that America loves war and crisis, but we still somehow managed to dismantle our healthcare and disaster response. Our governor just came out today with his "Stay Safe, Stay At Home" plan where he just didn't specifically tell anyone that they had to do anything. So people continue to work, and continue to go out...
I'm not even sure what's going on in Texas anymore. I know I can't go back to my workplace at all until further notice. Still needed to train about 25 staff members to use our online tutoring system, but can't do that in person. Can't meet with them on the system if they don't even know where to start with it. Sooo, yep, spent 12+ hours today recording videos of me using the system and hosting mock sessions. Still uploading them to YouTube as I type this.

I hear up to 15, first symptoms supposed to appear after 10-12 days. Though I suppose viral strains and responses differ for each cluster? I don't know. The death toll in Northern Italy is chilling.
Essentially this is "just" a flu-like disease that happens to be extremely aggressive on weakened bodies, but given that a lot of 30-40 year-old individuals in seemingly good health develop severe forms, it's hard to draw a pattern. It has been said that some of these complications came from people taking nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like Ibuprofen, when only Paracetamol "works" against the symptoms. I don't know if it's conclusive or anything, but whatever, don't swallow Ibuprofen if you're feeling a tad under the weather...

Still grateful to have a job, but I'm starting to get really stressed out by how much this situation is requiring me to work outside of normal hours. Those lines get blurred enough for people who work from home normally, but even moreso in this kind of situation where your department is suddenly in panic mode and trying to work remotely. Worked 9am-2am Friday/Saturday to get urgent stuff done. But now everything is urgent, and it won't stop being urgent. Can't work 17 hours a day though, so...wtf.
