how do adat optical cables work?

Ive been trying to figure this out for a while and after much research my conclusion is that it is black magic. So i was hoping someone on here might have a more professional way of describing how the hell that stuff works.

how i see things they are just normal lightpipe cables that are used to transport digital data from one (ADAT-capable) studio device to another. does that answer your question?

no i know that they transport digital data im trying to figure out how they work cuz they convert the signal into light or something like that and im trying to understand how the hell that shit is posible.
