they must have a fairly large fanbase by now, but how many of each have sold, i guess still life might had sold the most

Blackwater park - Over 80000 copies
The other albums - Somewhere around 30-40000 copies

Maybe Lee B can shed some light on this? Unless he has lied to the band about how many copies they sold, and kept the money to himself ;) j/k

I would tend to believe that the good sells of Blackwater Park will also sell the other albums - there are thousands of people, who didn't know anything about Opeth before BWP.

So, my not-so-educated-guess would be something like 50 000 each, except BWP around 100 000, for a total of approximately 300 000 albums sold alltogether.

sooooo....
Hows this compare to other underground metal bands?
How much do the biggest metal artists sell?

This is why metal is so good, nobody in the right mind would specialise in underground metal if they have visions of money or fame. Its got to be about the music.

Back in 97 all three Opeth albums were around the 15,000 mark. Now that's probably about 25,000 each. Maybe a bit more.

Jim's right. If everything on Candlelight had sold 5000 I'd have been a happy guy. Emperor and Opeth were the only two bands who actually broke even. Opeth didn't even turn a profit until "My Arms.." since we'd spent so much on advertising and tour support, etc. We had expensive bands like Beyond Dawn who only sold around 2000, and bands like Korpse and Dawn Of Dreams struggled to make it to 1000.

1000 CDs sounds like so little... and thats through a proper label... what hope do us unsigned bastards have in this world?!!
Still if i eventually sold 1000 CDs id be very very happy, assuming i had enough money coming in from other things to live off.

The sad thing is - you probably won't see any metallic reference (gold, platinum, etc) to any of Opeth's albums.

As long as we remember that what the mob says is good is usually bad, this is not unexpected. People buy crap for the most part because thats all they hear on the radio. Bands like Opeth & Emperor appeal to a more select audience that tends to be more loyal in terms of buying extras like t-shirts etc. Lets hope that Opeth can at least make a little money in the long run.

well i got more at my school. i have like 50 metalheads at my school and once i was sitting in my usual corner and one of em went over to talk to me and i was listening to Emporer "IX Equiibrium"- Curse You All Men and he told all of them to come over and listen and well. we now have 40 more black metalheads at our school. and 2 are black. this happened a year ago and all of em went into different degrees the guys who listened to popular ones. Opeth, Children Of Bodom, In Flames. Death etc. and only like 4 actually really got into it. if you've ever heard of The Essence Embraced that's what those 4 listen to. weird how in the course of one day like 50 people changed from ppl who listened to Linkin PArk to Opeth. sorta sucks for me though. but my point is with slipknot every kid is running around saying they are hardcore and then some guy tells them they arent and they go look into it and find the superior Opeth.

Does anyone know when Opeth's new album is coming out

WHY did BWP sell twice as much as the other albums combined?? Better marketing or what? What label is BWP on? On the "best opeth album" poll on this board you'll notice BWP is last place. At least it was last I checked.

It's Music For Nations isn't it? They went with them when Peaceville and MFN split.

I was surprised to hear that BWP has doubled all the rest of the albums. Not a bad bloody effort if you ask me.

they sold more than 10000 copies...they must've sold out!

Yeah, you're right. You know that when bands get that dubious Smith fellow in to do the artwork they're only in it for the money.
