How many EQ's do you have & why?

ReaEQ; simple and does the job.
SSL 9000k (Reason); because I just love it, I go with the knobs but can adjust with a graph like ReaEQ if needed.

I'd like to have what Fabfilter makes..

Waves GEQ Classic -
General shaping etc. I like to dial in each fader with my eyes closed. Works a treat.

DMG Audio Equality -
Precision EQ, mainly just remove high gain fizz nodes and the like. I also like to use this on drums.

Equality 90% of the time. The more I learned the less I used different EQs. I guess that's the conclusion one make after experience. I still own the old Air EQ version though so I will upgrade it once it's released. Whenever it will happen.

You guys are lucky I can't afford a half of these plugs. I've noticed a lot of people take this approach of "I just stick my DAW Eq, A freeware eq, or etc. no biggie" but i think to myself there's a reason top names choose these large console desks over and over for the biggest names and hit records. I'm just wondering if people will still feel the same if when lets say Slate comes out with VMR and it actually is top notch replications.

If i could choose between Bootsy EQ or Reaeq and there actually was an SS4K perfect eq, comp channelstrip with completely recreated behavior, circuitry. analogue distortion etc etc maybe even a channelstrip that had a console section, there is no way i'd ever choose a simple freeware eq IF i could afford it.

Depends what you want. I think stock EQs (in my case ReaEQ) is excellent at cuts because you're taking away from the signal, which generally is most of the time, and it has enough options to get you there, but not too many that make you second guess and think "what if" and boom, 2 hours are gone.

But, when it comes to EQ boosts, then that's where you want to add to the signal, and the high shelf seems to be where men are separated from the boys - and consequently where stock EQs just don't cut it, even with VCC, VTM and VBC stacked up downstream of the FX chain.

I used to record a signal, then think "Ah, I'll EQ that later", but now I invest effort into getting the track sounding close to how I want it before I think about EQ. Then it becomes about removing a few frequencies to help it sit better, and thus less reliance on EQ, and thus no need for 20 different VST options.

Now, I'm just a bedroom hobbyist, far from being a professional, so take that input as you will.

^ and further to all that, there's a video on youtube of Chris Lord Alge doing a master class and he has Green Day's Holiday, and you listen to the raw tracks (pre processed) and they're pretty much tracked quite close to how they sound in the final mix. Now, whether they went through EQs as part of the recording chain, I don't know, but when he starts the final mix, the tracks are already in the ballpark.

I just realized I must be a waves fan now:

Puigtec
Req
Ssl E/G Channel
API

This is all I've used lately. Occasionally I'll use equality, but it's pretty rare now.

The only reason I have most of what I have is due to sales.

Thinking back I picked up the DDMF plugs for a donation of $5 a piece (when he was doing it that way).

Q10 for like $15 or something like that.

The URS bundle while I was in college for 50% off the normal price (still a bit at $500, but still a lot cheaper than $1k)

I think the nomad factory was a no brainer sale from audiomidi.com and IIRC both that and the ch strip bundle was $30.

A lot of my plugins are purchased on sale. Actually I can't think of to many I purchased full price. I either got a student discount or snagged it on a sale.

My point though is plugins are very affordable if you keep your ear to the ground.

And you can allways buy cheap from other user on e.g. www.kvraudio.com
Bought Slate VCC there cheap. Christmas sale, summer sale, Black Friday etc are a great time to pick up something you want. Very few I too have paid full price for.

i use

DMG Equality
protools EQIII
some times a pultec clone
very rarely will i get the RenEQ or Q10 out for something, i find Q10 usefull for wrecking signals and making weird unnatural noises for electronic music
i get quite alot of use from Podfarms neve and api EQ plug-ins too, even with all knobs zero'd they each immediately add a different taste, no idea if they sound like the hardware versions as i deal with SSL only in real life, but i know what each plug in sounds like and what i love to use it on and that's what matters in the end

Cuts - Sonalksis, PT 7 band, EQuality as of last week!!

Low end boosts - Overtone Pultec, Sonimus Soneq, Bootsy Booteq
Mid boosts - Stillwell Vibe, Don't Crack Retro EQ, Soneq Pro
High end boosts - Stillwell 1973

Other: Don't Crack Clarisonix for sub. Bootsy VCS on buses.

Primarily, DMG Equick because it's fast, clutter free, low CPU, and 32 max bands and way cheaper than Pro-Q.

I have more eq's than I use. I don't usually use the stock Pro Tools plugins unless I need something while tracking otherwise:

DMG Equality
Metric halo
Ozone 5
I use these for surgical stuff.

Waves Api
Waves SSL
URS strip pro -
I use these for Shaping Tones. But more and more I try to get a good sound so I don't have to EQ other than HP and LP, something I have started doing until the last few years.
