How much of the $400 US goes towards the Apple branding in an iPOD?

this is a great deal on an external HD ... Free shipping too!
straight from Western Digital ...

http://store.westerndigital.com/product.asp?sku=2603666

Free shipping = total and complete win.

So the 80Gb is $100.

The 120Gb is $120.

That's $20 for the extra 40Gb. Am I reading that right? That's $0.50 per Gb difference?

And free shipping!!! I'm squeezing my hhram right now for all of you who want to know.

Another thing to think about with hard drive vs flash drive players is that the hard drive players can't take quite as much abuse (bouncing and such). Hard drive player still have moving parts, where flash players don't. Although I have a Dell hard drive player that I bounce the crap out of, and it is still going.

What the hell is a "flash drive player"? Something that reads from flash memory cards I suppose? If that's the case, do I need more than 1 flash card if I'm going to keep writing new data to it? How sturdy is flash memory?

And are we walking SmartMedia? I already have some of those cards for my Zoom Studio.

yeah, that's the right price. that's a lot of crappy Blind Guardian songs you can store :loco:

Actually, the one drawback I see of the external hard disk right now is that it needs its own AC adapter. Do western digital think I'm made of plug sockets or something? :loco:

I'd suggest ripping every CD you own PLUS every promo you get.

There's something quite depressing about all the original CDs just sitting there collecting dust.....

I'm only needing to rip stuff for when I'm on the road. Otherwise, I'll stick to my CDs when I have access to a hi-fi.

You dont know people like that? Most women I know have Ipods, or want a Ipod. And most trendy guys have one. Its like the special features cellphone craze wore off, and the ipod craze filled the void.
I never knew any of the cell phone wackos either, even if every friend of mine (except 1 person) has had a cell phone for years. Maybe it's surprising that I'm able to avoid all the trendy hipsters living in California, but that is what happens when you go to places that serve beer instead of cosmopolitans. :loco:

The iPod shuffle is the lamest invention since the [insert dumb invention here]. In fact, I can honestly say, I have NEVER listened to a CD on 'random' or 'shuffle' mode. I like things linear. Straight. In sequence!!!!
You're not the intended market. The people the iPod Shuffle is designed for, is the type of person who listens to all singles. That being said, I do occasionally put my iPod in shuffle mode. It's pretty wild to go from Miles Davis to Drudkh to Motley Crue to Diana Krall to Amon Amarth. Think of it as listening to a radio station that only plays songs you like. My buddy had been trying to convice me to check out the shuffle mode on my iPod for a while. When I finally did, I was surprised at how cool it actually is. You can also shuffle within a given genre (I set up a genre classification for all the songs on my iPod).

What the hell, man? I guess I'm like the Lone Ranger on this one, except without Tonto, or the horse, or the gun, or the mask, or the nut-hugging pants.

All I listen to are my original CDs. Nothing burned, nothing ripped (except the songs on that one thread), no iPods, no downloads. Before I leave for my morning commute, I grab about 5 CDs, and they last me for my trip to and fro work. When I'm at home, I throw in some CDs into my big stereo (GAH, the horror!!!!!!! Where's the 'puter???), put on my cordless headphones and rock out with my cock out.

:loco: No, seriously.

I listen to all original CDs except rare/expensive stuff, which I burn to CD-R first in case I scratch a $40 Swans CD while drunk at work or something.

I'm starting to hop on the bandwagon of downloading albums, but I only listen to those at the computer because listening at the computer pretty much sucks. If I like it enough to listen to it without deleting the files in disgust, I buy it. Similar with CD-Rs, when I get one that I like I only listen to it a handful of times, then wait until I buy the album to listen to religiously. The only exceptions have been John Frusciante, the illegally downloaded and burned to CD-R copy of which I listen to probably 10 times a day. Just haven't gotten around to buying the fucker yet.

By the way, Caselogic Koskin CD wallets are the BEST EVER. I've used many many many different CD wallets throughout my days, and these have lasted me like 6 years with very little wear and tear, even with daily abuse under various substance abuses (work, drugs, beer, car, etc.).

Yeah I guess the Ipod fad does sort of signify a switch away from owning and showing off cds. And instead one shows off the cool pastel color of ones ipod, or how many songs one was able to load onto the Ipod.

Of course the collectors like J etc, wont change, but it is clear popular culture is moving away from owning records etc. Maybe cds will be worth something soon? They may be the last physical purveyors of music; as I dont see there to be any need to make a better cd etc, when one can simply download it digitally onto ones computer and ipod without resorting to another medium like cds.

not sure how it is in your neck of the woods, but here in NYC pretty much all bars now use iPods as the DJ/Jukebox. They sit there behind the counter hooked up to the house system.

one lounge by my home even gives the customers access to their PC which is also hooked to the house system and has thousands of tracks ... it's like a free jukebox.

I remember a friend of mine did that at some wedding about 6 years ago, brought his entire computer to the reception. I thought it was one of the dumbest thing ever, and bar none the dorkiest. Now it's the young hip thing to do (I haven't witnessed the Ipod thing in bars yet). What do I know about diamonds?

Flash media is basically ROM smart media. You can write stuff to it over and over. I don't know why you'd need more than one card, unless you want to store more info. Flash media is very sturdy. It is what is used in the little tiny "sport" mp3 players. My wife has a Nike 256mb flash mp3 player, and she runs with it all the time. It can take a beating like that dude's face in Irreversible. They are WAY more reliable than a CD player.

I haven't read this entire thread, so I forgot why you are buying a hard drive and some other random device.

I only jumped on this bandwagon after moving back to Kansas and realizing I needed a way to listen to music in a dirty ol' tractor without killing 10 or 15 CDs a day. I just don't want to carry that much stuff around. Plus its hard to switch CDs when you're bouncing all over the place.

I occasionally listen in random on albums that don't have an established flow between tracks, but overall I agree. I'd hate to see a nonphysical, mp3-oriented medium like the Ipod overtake the sanctity of a continous album. And as others have urged, save yourself some money by getting an mp3-compatible portable discman. Or if storage is a concern, get a plastic case. Resist the Pod people.

Fuckin' A. I don't own an ipod or any of that other stuff and I'm actually quite lost as to just what the hell is being discussed in this thread, which strangely didn't stop me from reading it in its entirety. :tickled: I have a Sony walkman that has been to fucking hell and back with me. Seriously, anything you could do to a cd player has been done to that sumbitch, but it never skips, it never breaks. I used to carry about 100 cds around with me in one of those big friggin wallets, but now I just keep everything in its case, neatly organized on my shelves by my stereo and I choose a few I want to take with me for the day and it all works out. I have quite a few albums that I've bought on my computer so I can listen to them while I sit here on the forum, but that is the only time I listen to music that isn't played directly from the original cd.

I can understand why people might want one of those things though, I just don't need it. I never download anything either, so I'm sure J. and I are just "material" people to those who do, but that's ok with me. :loco:
