I've worked out how to get the tone from Live on The Edge of Forever.
I was messing around with setups because I have to play at college next week and although I've got a Mesa Boogie Quad coming my way it won't be here by then. I was using combinations of my Laney, Marshall 4x10, POD pro, Stageline PA power amp and a pair of Stageline PA speakers.
Basically I had the POD pro going into the Stageline PA power amp and then into the Marshall 4x10. This got that very distinct distortion sound from the album. I was using a JCM-800 patch with quite a bit of distortion and with a bit of EQ I could probably getting it even closer. I tried other models (like the boogie) but none of them were as close as the JCM. I guess it's the combination of the POD, solid state power amp and guitar cab that give the distinctive sound. btw, I was using a Parker Fly but I'm sure it would work with most guitars (as long as they have semi-decent pickups).
It was mighty fun riffing along to Of Sins And Shadows
