I know this issue has been addressed a bunch of times here but I can't find any of the threads. Can someone point me to solutions to pickup hum due to video monitors?
I hate this shit as well. Its the reason I love having a LCD screen instead of those pos tube monitors... If you don't have a LCD that will get rid of it, otherwise get as far away as you can from the monitor when recording. The best you can do for tracks already tracked with the hum is to take SPAN or other spectrum analyzer to see where its at (in my case it was around 10800hz) and notch it out. Ground loop hum is a whole different can of worms though.
I wish. If you are recording with a laptop, the hum is more likely a grounding issue within the laptop. On-board soundcards are highly susceptible to interference and especially so if the laptop isn't properly grounded when plugged in.
I'm recording with a custom built desktop routed to a LCD TV via HDMI. The TV and the computer are plugged into separate outlets with a high quality power supply and "clean" outlets.
So, if any of the following are present, change it:
1. Laptop- unplug it and record by battery.
2. Desktop- make sure power supply isn't "dirty" (needs to give consistent voltage) and try plugging the monitor and tower into different outlets.
3. Soundcard. I'm assuming you have an external soundcard (fireface, m-box, etc). If not, get one ASAP!
Ran into a similar issue yesterday recording DI's for a demo my band is putting out. Noticed months ago that our amps were all noisy in the room. Old shit wiring.... Pretty much figured we'd get the same noise when doing DI's. Was correct. Slapped a gate in front of interface, good to go. Now I'm sure I'll listen back closer after tracking almost a full song and realize they are unusable due to noise I couldn't hear while tracking.
