I dropped my new Gibson Les Paul!

Haha, nice pic. Thanks! ;D

The interesting thing about this is, that the crack is located at the nut and continues in parallel to the grain of the wood. It's about 1 inch long. From your picture the crack has to be more on the headstock, right where the wood is so thin. Mmmh, maybe a production failure? I mean, the crack wasn't there, right after I dropped it. I noticed it about one week later!?

Man, do I know the feeling... I used to own an LP Custom...

Almost 10 years ago, I was playing this huge show (big for me at the time) with a hardcore band I was in and we had like 700-800 people there to see us and it was just crazy.

We were in the middle of this really awesome part of one of our songs, so I jumped off the stage and started running around in the pit with everyone... while playing... about 20 seconds in the pit, this HUGE dude (now, I'm a big guy, but this guy lifted me with minimal effort) scooped me up from behind and sat me on his shoulder and continued to run around the pit...

All I remember (cause it happened pretty fast) was that I felt him get taken down and I landed on a few people who tried to catch me and the head of my guitar hit the ground pretty hard. Snapped right off... I remember feeling the wood break in slow motion... pretty nasty feeling.

Luckily my singer at the time played, so he grabbed my spare, plugged in and finished the song (it was close to the end anyway)...

I will never forget that.

Well, i would say that about 70% of all broken Les Paul-type necks break like this:

15% break like this:

And the rest break like this:

Sometimes the crack doesnt go all the way through the wood, but after being in tension for a while it eventually snaps.. so that might be what happened to your guitar.
BUT if your neck really was cracked, i dont think it would stay in tune.. are you sure that its not just the lacquer that got stressed by the fall?
I mean, 99% of all strats look like they have a crack in the body at the neck joint after a few years:
