control-denied777:

If you can't hear the melodies in Strapping Young Lad's music you obviously need to get your head out of your ass because it seems to be impairing your listening ability.

OK i was hoping it wouldn't come down to this, but you've proclaimed your ignorance so loudly to everybody that reads your lackluster posts, I feel I have no choice but to put you in your place, if for nothing else than saving my friends of this board from possibly believing something you might say.

If you HONESTLY believe that that anything Devin Townsend (or SYL for that matter) writes is just 'noise' then, I feel very sorry for you, because you're obviously tone deaf (on top of being a fucking moron).

Devin's music consists of nothing but melody, harmony, and beat, and everything else you might claim to be what it's not. Gene Hoglan should consider himself lucky that he gets to play with someone like Devin.

I've been a metal radio DJ for 6+ years, I've been in metal bands for just as long so I feel I have enough credentials to decipher what's 'noise' and what's not. I can guarantee you that everything I've heard from Devin Townsend (Devin Townsend Band in particular) simply excels far above and beyond anything else that anyone has ever done in the past 10 years. Opeth? Yeah, they're good, but they are a little to extreme for everyone's taste. Dream Theater? Equally as good, but too 'tech' to keep everyone's attention.

Devin Townsend's music is the perfect blend of musicianship, catchiness, and technicality. He can write something for ANYONE, and if you seriously consider that to be nothing more than 'noise' then you obviously don't know how to listen to music.

Or maybe you just listen to what all your friends tell you is good, and 'cool.'

From a levelheaded perspective, I ask you to honestly take a listen to Devin's music. Analyze it, critique it, take a break, then listen again. If it never appeals to you, then maybe you shouldn't be listening to metal, because Devin Townsend represents everything metal should be in 2005 and beyond.

The end.

It wins very much. (Character.) I are buying.

I have Alien, but I still need to hear it. So maybe I play it now.

Kevin is still my hero...

and on the "Character" questions - imagine "Damage Done", but faster, harsher, and with new elements. Its glorious. The most logical step after DD.

After seeing SYL live with Meshuugah I realized that Devin is fucking amazing. Nuff said that is all. It was a pure wall of sound for an hour straight. I about cried it was so good. HE STOPPED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE SHOW TO GO TAKE ACRAP. It was hilarious, then he came back out and played an extra two songs at the end to make up for the break. Gene hoglan stood right in front of me during meshuggah and since I am only 5'7" and hes a beast needless to say i coudlnt see that stage. Also the new DARK TRAN. kicks ass from what I have heard so far. SYL is a solid wall of noise , rythmn ,and melody all at one time. Hes brilliant.

Great post. As you can see by my name, I am also a huge dev fan...have been for quite some time. So, i'll throw in my two cents...

The great thing about dev is that sometimes when I hear a song I like, metal or not, on the radio or in someone else's CD player, I think to myself "sounds like Devin Townsend could have written it." He has a song for everyone, and his music can appeal to such a wide range of people, from the most extreme metal fan (Oh My Fucking God), to a symphonic rock fan (anything from Ocean Machine) to even an MTV pop fan (Slow me Down). If you like Music slow or fast, brutal or melodic or both, he satisfies your wants. His music is, in my mind, the most emotionally gripping and damned closest to physically connecting I have ever heard in my ears. His vocal ability to his layering to his impeccible sense of melody makes him the single greatest (and underappreciated) musician of the past 10+ years. One of the best things about his music is that you find something new every time you listen to it. If we're talking about deciphering melody, listen to Colonial Boy and try to count how many layers of sound there are in the chorus. Throw on headphones and listen to Ocean Machine and tell me there is no melody. I'd be willing to bet there is more melody in Funeral than in some entire albums floating around out there. Listen to Physicist all the way through and try to tell me you're not awstruck at the sheer power of it. It's mindblowing.

Yes, that is how much he has affected my life, and I know others, albeit a select few, can agree. You don't just listen to Devin's music, you feel it.
