I think it's kind of fucked up that Belle and Sebastian conceal their singer because

I took a class that was partially focused around the "I don't criticize" attitude toward music/books/etc...generally, any time you "like" or "dislike" something, you've made a value judgment. Subconscious or not, it's still critical and based off a set of rules that you, for whatever reason, have decided are valid for yourself.

So really, everyone's doing the same thing. Saying that you "criticize" just means that you've examined the rules you use; "not criticizing" just means you haven't.

It sucks how "criticism/criticizing" has negative connotations nowadays. I wish it were totally neutral.

What if she didn't want to be splashed everywhere (as opposed to the band deciding they needed to hide her)? Probably at least partially because of the invariable way her looks would be mocked?
if this is what's in her head, i have a list of people i wish she'd speak to

i dunno, i mean, if i were a fat chick in a band, i might do the same thing. to do otherwise kind of ignores the very real and very powerful image culture surrounding people, and women especially, and overweight women especially.

alex, what i mean is, i'd never take a class to criticize or not criticize music, or writing. it wouldnt occur to me that i'd be capable of it. i dont even really think about it. it's like 'oh i like that'. i'm sure there's judgment in there somewhere, but i'm never conscious of it and i dont really give it any thought. and music in itself is way at the bottom of my list of things i pay much attention to.

i have no idea what i'd do if i were a girl. i mean i doubt i'd be cute enough to be in a band and make a good impression but if i were, i dont think i'd be okay with hiding my busted little face just so a few white belts'd buy the album either it'd make me sad :(

yeah, preppy, i got that--i was just saying that "criticizing" music isn't a separate activity from just "listening" to it.

and i'm hazarding the guess that "the white belts" are MORE likely than "the general public" to accept and appreciate a band with ugly people in it.

i dunno alex i'd think that maybe they could be a bit uglier in a 'different looking' sense. but i doubt hipsters are any less harsh/judgmental than you're average person.

yea you should listen to the girls from BCO in a room together (at least when i used to post there) when they'd hang out. christ. ruthless b.s. totally awful.

no more like to clothes since their faces are all busted up. and/or kitsch accessories.

alex i just sent you a wicked important email.

man go look through the photographs and hottness posts on MOC or LNC someday and then make that statement again.

Actually just look at the board and see what % of the thread topics are about who's hot.
