I think it's kind of fucked up that Belle and Sebastian conceal their singer because

eighty percent of the people on those sites who are getting called HOTT are NOT hott at all. they're sometimes straight-up busted and usually average. sometimes "kind of pretty, in this picture", at best.

well that's what i mean it's like this weird different standard but they stick by it regardless, and they're just as judgmental.

yes, that's true. which is why i speculated that a fat, ugly girl could possibly fit within their weird, different standard easier than in the general-public cultural monolith of slim 'n' blonde 'n' regular-featured.

except that most of the time, it still comes down to basic standards. like, they'll LIKE a girl like that, but they wont IDOLIZE a girl like that. maybe slightly more tolerance for a 'dumpy' appearance. but as far as fatness goes, no scene is more tolerant to it than the ghetto scene forreal.

greg, basically:

1.) alex is trying to destroy the indie pop band Belle and Sebastian by speaking for them on the internet.

2.) he is also trying to assert that scenesters don't care about appearance as much as non-scenesters.

1. they are twee-pop

2. quite the contrary. i'm saying scenesters' enormous devotion to image isn't based on the general public's standards of beauty and sometimes even flies in the face of them.

i dont think hipsters standards are all that different. i think they like to act like they are, but all in all, it's the same standards set to a few slightly different yet still strict guidelines of lifestyle/appearance.

i'm sorry. i just thought toby's summary of what alex was saying made alex sound like a dick in the context and i thought my response would be both simple and funny albeit at the expense of being mean to alex who is way more intelligent (read: a dick) than me.
