I think we can all agree on one thing

PD are indeed grind...not thrash.

and we're not 'losers'...this is one of the best topics that has ever been posted because it's FACT that loomis is hands down the best guitarist in the underground scene, thanks.

Thats cool, i listen to alot of Black metal too. What are you currently listening to?

I liked the new Borknagar and NAglfar albums. I actually have been listening to Marduk Wolrd Funeral alot lately. Its not so much Black metal but I liked the new Cradle of Filth alot, they are so hit and miss with most people but i still like them. The new Mayhem was pretty good. THeir are so many low profile black metal bands over there in swedenand Norway now days its hard to keep up with them.
I used to listen to cradle of filth in high schoo(graduated 1 year ago) then I got into dimmu, but I mainly liked their PEM, I still like it, then I downloaded a bunch of emperor and satyricon, and haven't looked back.
I recently got dark funeral, dissection, Gorgoroth(destroyer) immortal, oh and old mans child, but that's like mini dimmu, same class, but better.
So still got alot of bands to get, I have the new COF, I like it actually, Nymphetamine Overdose is good.

Something like that can only be an opinion not fact. And I don't agree with you in the least. He's technically excellent, but he does little for me. And how is it even a relevant topic on the In Flames forum?

I've heard good things about the new Borknagar.

Borknagar are a shadow of the band they once were. Their debut album (or even The Olden Domain) is much better than Empiricism or Epic.

Nice list of bands. Dimmu Borgir's best album is Stormblast in my opinion. I'd actually say that PEM is one of their weakest. Old Man's Child aren't that good, kind of like Dimmu Borgir with weaker songwriting. The new Cradle Of Filth album? Well, it's better than the last one, but it's just not enough to keep me listening to that band. From these bands, spend all of your money on Emperor, Satyricon, Immortal, Dissection and Gorgoroth. You will NOT regret it. Marduk and Dark Funeral are pretty cool, too. :headbang:

Ya, PEM isn't their strongest from a "true" black metal standpoint, but I listen to all kinds of rock music... so I dont mind if a bands strays from their original style, unless it's like in flames.. cuz it's so diffrent, but STYE has a few good songs.
The music on their albums written in their native tongue is good, but since i can't understand it, i cant get really into it.
I dont really like cradle that much, but i like the album :headbang:

i saw nevermore and he did nothing for me i thought Alexi Lahio and Roope Latvala were the best guitarist on the bill that night. i Believe those two dude are still "underground, seeing how Nevermore played higher on the bill.

Well, I wasn't saying this wasn't true. I just heard that Epic was good.

Empiricism was odd because I wasn't used to hearing Vintersorg singing. Quintessence was okay.

just because he doesnt do it for you doesnt mean that he isnt the best. tim duncan doesnt do it for me but he's obviously the best player in the nba. and alexi isnt near loomis, sorry!

Sorry, but I'm with arch_enemy666, I definitely prefer Alexi Laiho to Jeff Loomis. And in my mind, that means he ISN'T the best, sorry.

Alexi doesn't seem that great at all, I have an live bootleg and he totally screws up the lead in needles 24/7, off by a fret or two usally.. sloppyness!

It wouldn't surprise me, but that isn't my point. My point is that technical ability does not equal greatness. I would consider Jesper Stromblad as a weaker technical player than both Laiho and Loomis, but I much prefer his output to either of the other two.

I agree with the above, because I like Alexi's work best when he recorded with Jesper in Sinergy I think Jesper's great playing made Alexis playing much better. I only hope Jesper can bring that great guitar talent back to In Flames because the greatness hasn't been there for the last two.

I agree, most in flames are easy to play, just the sound of them is pleasing, and the harmonizing guitar work, and I don't know that in flames does solos like COB does.. atleast I have a "live cd" no idea where or when show is, just labeled as live, but its recentish cuz it has hate crew deathroll songs on it.
I prefer John Petrucci, but when I bring that up, most people tell me technicle ability does not= good

No, that's sweet. I'm not much of a Petrucci fan, but to each their own. I just didn't like the way Devy_Metal was trying to tell us that his opinion was fact. I mean it's cool that he really digs Jeff Loomis, but don't tell me I have to.

Loomis is amazing, I'd say his weakest solos are on 'Dreaming Neon Black'. That album solos wise does not show off his kills, it sounds like he wanted to do more atmospheric stuff taking a step down from shredding. 'Politics' and 'Deadheart' is where it's at.

Alexi and COB do nothing for me, all their songs, harmonies and solos sound the same to my ears. Very cheesy annoying stuff IMO.

Here is what Akerfeldt has to say about Loomis after seeing their recently released clip from Backstage w/ Sneap.

''That was great! I remember Andy Sneap showed us where he was gonna build the new studio and now it seem to be done! Great seeing that clip. I love Nevermore, I think they're vastly underrated, and Loomis as a guitar player is unbelievable! You can't mention the guy from Bodom in the same sentence, quite honestly it's the C-league in comparison! Loomis is probably my favourite guitarplayer in metal today! And a great, great guy as well. We toured with them some years back and the guys are fantastic! Can't wait to hear the new album!!!
...
Loomis is not only a great player, I think he's got an ear for music, exciting ways of putting solos together, on top of this he writes most of the stuff for the band. Nevermore has got "nerve" in their music which is essential for me if I'm gonna like something. Wow, I'm really hyping him, but I truly think he's fantastic! As for guitarplayers, there's a zillion of shredders out there and they don't do fuck-all for me any more.
Cheers
Mike''

Interesting read, Devy. Still, I'd rather listen to Akerfeldt's playing rather than Loomis'. I used to have a copy of a Nevermore album, but ended up getting rid of it, it just didn't do anything for me. I can't remember which one it was... it would've been at least 5 years back, though. COB's okay, but I don't own any of their albums, nor do I intend to buy any of them. If I want to hear that sort of thing, but done better, I just go back to old school In Flames.

You really should give Nevermore another chance. They're unbelievable! Get Dead Heart in a Dead World and listen to the awesome production, solo's, riffing and unique style. Engines of Hate!
