I want to slap those people who samplereplace entire drumkits(Specially snares and toms.), and those people who do insane amounts of retakes and quantize the drums to a dimension where its not even possible to play.

Sadly, ive sold my soul and done that shit my self.
But im not proud of it.

If a band cant play their songs, well, thats too bad for them.

Sorry, I have to do this. Haha

You don't have to tune peoples parts. There were always terrible musicians, prior to autotune they just sounded out of tune. It's your decision to tune or not. Actually, the fact that you are willing to spend so much time to tuning tracks makes me think that in tune tracks are very important to you and that you like how they sound, therefore, you should be thanking autotune, rather than blaming it for allowing you to create something you find listen-able.

That said, I understand your frustration. Good luck! :D

need it 50 more to go

I'll sample replace and fix minor mistakes, but that's as far as it goes. If they're willing to do the part enough times to get it right, great. Otherwise someone listening to the band is going to say "man that vocalist sucks."

As someone who (somewhat reluctantly) sings on records what I hate is that everyone's standard has become 100% flawless pitch. Go listen to some pre 1997 records and note all of the perfectly human/acceptable flaws.

yes this is what comes to my mind when i think of singing now everythign has to be so tight and perfect it has no real feel left............................

For real. Even your "great" vocalists. I'd rather hear 100% quantized and sample-replaced drum tracks (I was listening to some '80s goth/new wave stuff earlier and thought both the programmed drums and the vocals sounded great) than vocals that sound like they're being sung into a vocoder throughout. It's grating on the ears, simply because it's not what a human voice sounds like, just an approximation of one, and it's not a cool sounding effect (like a proper vocoder, distortion or whatnot). It's just a tool, like everything else that people bitch about, whether it's compression, sample replacement or the like, and like every tool, it has its place. But its place isn't on everything. It's there to fix a problem, not make everything mathematically perfect.

Got an album upcoming in July with a serious world-class vocalist. We've worked together before & have a strict "no autotune" rule. Even for his insane 5 part harmonies......

Vocal lessons pay off way more than autotune.

it does have its uses though. the way i see it with a "money" vocalist i would spend the extra time to get it right but with someone who is practically tone deaf it's not worth spending the time and better to use melodyne for me. the technology is getting so good it's scary. if you don't overuse it with a so so vocalist and just use it tastefully here and there it really doesn't hurt. they lack the capability to deliver the "golden take" so you might as well make sure it is more in tune.

Yes, I try and use Autotune and pitch shifting only to repair lines that are blatantly out of tune. I don't want to go through the whole vocals if not necessary..

Go watch the latest Linkin Park live video. Man, I wish they would have used Autotune (or any other pitch-correction) on Chester's voice... :Puke:
