ICED EARTH @ Wacken...

The debut rules. I thought both Gene Adams and John Greely were awesome singers as well. Granted I cant compare them to Barlow, but he is almost in a league himself in my book.

Interesting. I must admit, although I consider Iced Earth one of my favorite bands, I've never really given the pre-Barlow material much of a shake. Perhaps I should.

Definitely. You've heard Days of Purgatory though right? Most of the songs are re-sung by Barlow, but without re-recording the music, so it offers the best of both worlds.

In any case, Greely is a much more competent singer on Night of the Stormrider than Gene Adam is on the s/t debut - it's also worth hearing the songs in their original order. There's also a really cool song on NotS that was never re-worked or re-released called "Mystical End" that, while simplistic, is extremely catchy.

I own it, but must admit, I've never really given it much of a listen (<--- bizarre, right?).

Cool. I'll definitely queue this stuff up today.

ive only ever heard the debut, and i dont even think i finished it. it was terrible.

granted this isnt my thing. iced earth need more black metal

BTW Neil, their BEST???? I agree it's solid, but stacked against Burnt Offerings & Night of the Stormrider, I have to say it falls short.

Ok, well 'Night of the Stormrider' is their best too. And so is 'Burnt Offerings'. :D

It really just depends on my mood, but as I've gotten older and more into repetitive music ('Vikingligr Veldi', 'Australasia', 'Yanqui U.X.O.') there's just something about the 'oom-Pah! oom-Pah!' drumbeat permeating the whole album that just hits the fucking spot.

Personally, I can't really stand 'Days of Purgatory'. Sure, it's nice to hear Barlow doing the old stuff, but I don't really mind the original singers, and the sound on that thing is such a bass-heavy mess it just rubs me the wrong way. Once 'Alive in Athens' was released, 'Days of Purgatory' became obsolete IMO.

Nice call on the early Enslaved. Yeah, it always depends on mood - I really got into the latest Rudra that's a repetitive asskicker from beginning to end. I've also been spinning Mephistopheles' "Songs of the Desolate Ones" non-stop since my return from HC. Naglfaristic black metal with a HUGE infusion of melody. Zod should be all over this.

I have to wholeheartedly disagree there. I'm sure you have quite the personal connection to AIA, and dont' get me wrong, I love it as well, but being able to hear Barlowized studio versions of "Travel in Stygian", "Desert Rain", "When the Night Falls", "Pure Evil", "Iced Earth" and the awesome "Cast in Stone" is completely worth the purchase price.

Aside from that I've never had a problem with the production, mix, or anything I've heard on it and I must've spun it 500 times by now over the years. Great, great stuff.

Also, I definitely don't mind Greely, but Gene Adam's out of tune wailing really gets on my nerves after awhile.
