Don't you ever get...
The debut would be a pretty strong album with a different singer/drummer....
Thats why Days of Purgatory kicks so much ass.

Every other release, other than the debut, is better than Glorious Burden.

Interesting. I must admit, although I consider Iced Earth one of my favorite bands, I've never really given the pre-Barlow material much of a shake. Perhaps I should.BTW Neil, their BEST???? I agree it's solid, but stacked against Burnt Offerings & Night of the Stormrider, I have to say it falls short.

I own it, but must admit, I've never really given it much of a listen (<--- bizarre, right?).Definitely. You've heard Days of Purgatory though right? Most of the songs are re-sung by Barlow, but without re-recording the music, so it offers the best of both worlds.
Cool. I'll definitely queue this stuff up today. In any case, Greely is a much more competent singer on Night of the Stormrider than Gene Adam is on the s/t debut - it's also worth hearing the songs in their original order. There's also a really cool song on NotS that was never re-worked or re-released called "Mystical End" that, while simplistic, is extremely catchy.

Ok, well 'Night of the Stormrider' is their best too. And so is 'Burnt Offerings'.
skyrefuge said:It really just depends on my mood, but as I've gotten older and more into repetitive music ('Vikingligr Veldi', 'Australasia', 'Yanqui U.X.O.') there's just something about the 'oom-Pah! oom-Pah!' drumbeat permeating the whole album that just hits the fucking spot.
skyrefuge said:Personally, I can't really stand 'Days of Purgatory'. Sure, it's nice to hear Barlow doing the old stuff, but I don't really mind the original singers, and the sound on that thing is such a bass-heavy mess it just rubs me the wrong way. Once 'Alive in Athens' was released, 'Days of Purgatory' became obsolete IMO.
