TARJA-My Winter Storm

Off topic: Sorry, but as an English major and journalist I have to throw this out there. There is no such word as alot or allot. It's a lot. Two words. Totally not relevant, I know, but it's bugging me.

Sorry, for that it has always bugged me to, and i never really knew what was right. At work Lotus notes spell checker has it as allot. So thanks AMBR for setting this non-spelling old geezer straight.

Umm, allot is definately a word meaning assign, allocate, apportion, designate, ration, or give. The use of alot doesn't bother me half as much as the misuse of there, their, and they're.

As for the bashing, Nightwish launched an all out campaign to heap as much public humiliation and embarrassment as they possibly could after the split. They posted her firing in an open letter to everyone on the internet. They have made several loud and public derogatory statements about her. They wrote, recorded, and released a song specifically to bash her. Then they opened their world tour with that song to slam her on every stop. "Loved her as a sister," they say? That blurb pales in any comparison.

It wouldn't suprise me though if Tarja's album gathered a mainstream audience and becomes more successful than DPP. For my tastes "Dark Passion Play" is far superior to "My Winter Storm" in every way. I had really high hopes for this release, but it's so dissapointing that there's no way I'll ever buy it. Nevertheless, Nightwish's collective behavior in an almost completely one sided feud has been abhorrent.

I agree with your statement. The whole thing was just "silly" from the start. It's worse than some WB teen soap opera.

When I first saw this thread posted, I predicted that it would turn into a slam Tarja thread. Personally, I don't give a rat's ass what happened between Tarja and Nightwish, because I don't know any of these people. The new Nightwish disc is killer to say the least! Regardless, I do want to hear Tarja's new effort as well. Actually, I'm glad to hear that it doesn't sound like vintage Nightwish, so my interest is peaked....

I appreciate your impartiality and open-mindedness regarding the whole Tarja Vs. Nightwish "controversy". No, this is indeed NOT a Nightwih album, but it IS a Tarja CD, and she sounds as good as ever, if not better. I have always been a major Tarja fan, even when she was in Nightwish. She and Tuomas were always my favorite NW members, and now that she's gone solo, Marco is now my 2nd favorite member of NW. I love Tarja's new CD.:headbang::kickass::worship: In fact, it's in my Top 5 albums of the year!

I think that's the problem with it. So many people listen to "My Winter Storm" expecting some continuation of some presence of Nightwish.

If you come in with an open mind and no pretenses, you won't say stuff like "Nightwish has nothing to fear". I really enjoy the disk - even the FULL Poison cover (not the sample which so many people heard). Really, there's only one song on there that sounds like a pure metal song.

There's just a hair too many slow songs which hurt the flow of the album, but there's some great stuff on there too. What's so ironic about it is how Tuomas loves Hans Zimmer so much, but Tarja was the one who actually got some of his people to help with the orchestrations on the album. You can definitely tell (the bridge part in I Walk Alone springs to mind). Even though I love the orchestra on DPP, I think Tarja's album did a better job of getting that "Media Ventures" sound Tuomas loves so much.

All in all, I'd give it a 8.5 or 9 out of 10. It's still growing on me the more I listen to it. A great release, but if you only like metal - then take a pass. Don't bash it just because it's a completely different style/mood then Nightwish.
Hail!:headbang: All I ask is that everyone listens to this CD with an open and non-judgmental mind. I'd rate it a 9.75/10 at this point. I like this album more with each listen. Tarja's gonna be just fine on her own. I wish her nothing but the best.:headbang:

I think the disc is just fine for a Tarja disc. This is who she is now. Its not easy separating her from the great band that she was in, but this is the disc she has released since, and its a good one based on what she has done.

Aside from the "Poison" cover which I don't think "fits" on the disc, and disrupts the general flow of the disc, overall its a pleasant performance ranging from ballads, to hard rock, to some metal moments. She has basically dropped the opera style vocals, and is using her normal tone (if you will).
That is a fair review of this disc, but I really like the "Poison" cover, although perhaps it should've been a bonus track at the end of the album.

Are you saying that nobody can post anything negative about Tarja without it turning "into a slam Tarja thread"?

The quality of her new album is well below anything NW has done, musically or lyrically. The videos (which play a huge part in generating album sales) are horrifically bad.

It really does not matter who was the driving force behind this solo effort; the only thing her potential audience will see/hear is something far outside of their musical comfort zone, and she is the face of this sound.

This is not bashing Tarja, it is bashing what she has done.
With all due respect, I must say that she will most likely gain many new fans with this CD, and this album is definitely in MY comfort zone. I really like what she's done on this record, and I can't wait to hear what she'll do next. You GO, Tarja!:headbang::kickass::worship:

We all have opinions. I do not see Tarja playing to 50,000 seat arenas any time soon.

Not trying to start an argument here, Jason, but just want to clear something up. She really, really wanted to start a career along this path for some time and stuck it out with NW due to many different pressures. This really is what she wanted and it just came about awkwardly. Shame for all the bad feelings that resulted, but in the end, no one has been forced into a situation they didn't want. Tuomas never really envisioned her type of vocals for his music and she always felt awkward in the metal role. This is so good for all, it's just a shame better communication didn't make it happen in a better way.

I'm just going by the public statements. I never claimed that I knew the whole story. I do agree that Tuomas seemed to want to go away from Tarja's strengths as a vocalist. Course, I kinda scratched my head over the selection of Annette, because she didn't seem to be the ideal choice either. I keep feeling that Tuomas is writing around Annette's limitations as a vocalist.

So be it. I'm happy for her and them and love seeing the resulting recordings. It's all good in the end. :headbang:

True enough. I hope, tho, that things get stronger over time. I'm still struggling with Spock's Beard without Neal Morse.

Jason

I see her playing to 2,000 seat theaters in the USA in 2008, at least.

That would be great, but I don't think it's realistic at all if you are talking about promoting her solo material. More than likely, the fan demand would be more inline for the smaller, shithole venues that she despised when touring the USA. I'd be shocked if she came to the USA anytime soon (several years), unless she lands a role in an opera or something like that. Nightwish may be able to sell out a few of the larger venues like BB Kings or House of Blues, but Tarja drawing 2,000 fans a night in the USA to see her solo act isn't something I can see happening. For perspective, the PP venue in Atlanta is about 1,500 capacity.

OK, cool. How about the Masquerade, for example? I wouldn't describe that joint as a shithole, by any means.

You, sir, haven't been backstage.

Rumour has it they might even repair the damage from that upstairs fire that took place 2? 3? years ago.....someday.
Until then, the headliners' dressing room remains a cramped room with a staircase up to nowhere.

Tarja will be lucky if she gets gigs at Don Hill's, never mind BB Kings. Look, let's face it, other then the few fans she has after the bustup, how many fans will she get with her first solo effort? How much money and payola do you think Universal is going to pump into the US for Tarja? To her credit, she does not carry herself like a Hunts Point $10 hooker, which many of today's female pop stars do. Sadly, that is what it will take for her to explode in the US.

Look, if clubs snickered (at least in NYC) at Zak Stevens, who has a STRONGER pedigree (Sav and TSO), what do you think they will do regarding Tarja? Open the checkbooks and order red carpets? The truth of the matter is that FROM what I heard of the CD, it is not a good one. She needed to have professional songwriters do the lyrics and arrangements for her. Maybe then Tarja could have done some serious damage. Sadly, I see her as Eddie Trunk sees Ozzy Osbourne: Is this TRULY what she wants for her career? Or, is this what Marcelo wants for her career. If the answer is the former, then she is truly delusional. If it is the latter, she is profoundly gullible and Marcelo should be in jail for fraud and being a con man.

But, then again, maybe Universal did this as a favor? If Universal REALLY gave a damn about marketing the "Classy Lady", they would have brought in an outfit like Creative Artists, and finagled a way to buy out Tarja's contract with NEMS and place her under Creative Artists. Then, with Marcelo told to "Sit there and shut up.", they would have marketed Tarja up the ying-yang in the US. But, since Marcelo is Marcelo, I doubt very seriously that Universal will do all that they can do for Tarja, and will cut her loose after 2 CDs.

Sad.

Peace,
Ray C.

Thanks, y'all, and NO-I've never been backstage at the Masquerade. Nor do I now wish to after Pellaz's assessment of the current digs thereabouts.

Really only 2 solo albums (X-mas one and My Winter Storm)

There were some singles released before the X-mas one, and some singles for IWA, but that's it (to my knowledge).

She did the one CD where it's her and 2 other singers doing opera-like songs - but that's not really a solo project for her.
