Are you saying that nobody can post anything negative about Tarja without it turning "into a slam Tarja thread"?
Not at all. I don't owe Tarja anything.

Off topic: Sorry, but as an English major and journalist I have to throw this out there. There is no such word as alot or allot. It's a lot. Two words. Totally not relevant, I know, but it's bugging me.

As for the bashing, Nightwish launched an all out campaign to heap as much public humiliation and embarrassment as they possibly could after the split. They posted her firing in an open letter to everyone on the internet. They have made several loud and public derogatory statements about her. They wrote, recorded, and released a song specifically to bash her. Then they opened their world tour with that song to slam her on every stop. "Loved her as a sister," they say? That blurb pales in any comparison.
It wouldn't suprise me though if Tarja's album gathered a mainstream audience and becomes more successful than DPP. For my tastes "Dark Passion Play" is far superior to "My Winter Storm" in every way. I had really high hopes for this release, but it's so dissapointing that there's no way I'll ever buy it. Nevertheless, Nightwish's collective behavior in an almost completely one sided feud has been abhorrent.
I appreciate your impartiality and open-mindedness regarding the whole Tarja Vs. Nightwish "controversy". No, this is indeed NOT a Nightwih album, but it IS a Tarja CD, and she sounds as good as ever, if not better. I have always been a major Tarja fan, even when she was in Nightwish. She and Tuomas were always my favorite NW members, and now that she's gone solo, Marco is now my 2nd favorite member of NW. I love Tarja's new CD. In fact, it's in my Top 5 albums of the year! When I first saw this thread posted, I predicted that it would turn into a slam Tarja thread. Personally, I don't give a rat's ass what happened between Tarja and Nightwish, because I don't know any of these people. The new Nightwish disc is killer to say the least! Regardless, I do want to hear Tarja's new effort as well. Actually, I'm glad to hear that it doesn't sound like vintage Nightwish, so my interest is peaked....

Hail! All I ask is that everyone listens to this CD with an open and non-judgmental mind. I'd rate it a 9.75/10 at this point. I like this album more with each listen. Tarja's gonna be just fine on her own. I wish her nothing but the best.I think that's the problem with it. So many people listen to "My Winter Storm" expecting some continuation of some presence of Nightwish.
If you come in with an open mind and no pretenses, you won't say stuff like "Nightwish has nothing to fear". I really enjoy the disk - even the FULL Poison cover (not the sample which so many people heard). Really, there's only one song on there that sounds like a pure metal song.
There's just a hair too many slow songs which hurt the flow of the album, but there's some great stuff on there too. What's so ironic about it is how Tuomas loves Hans Zimmer so much, but Tarja was the one who actually got some of his people to help with the orchestrations on the album. You can definitely tell (the bridge part in I Walk Alone springs to mind). Even though I love the orchestra on DPP, I think Tarja's album did a better job of getting that "Media Ventures" sound Tuomas loves so much.
All in all, I'd give it a 8.5 or 9 out of 10. It's still growing on me the more I listen to it. A great release, but if you only like metal - then take a pass. Don't bash it just because it's a completely different style/mood then Nightwish.
That is a fair review of this disc, but I really like the "Poison" cover, although perhaps it should've been a bonus track at the end of the album.I think the disc is just fine for a Tarja disc. This is who she is now. Its not easy separating her from the great band that she was in, but this is the disc she has released since, and its a good one based on what she has done.
Aside from the "Poison" cover which I don't think "fits" on the disc, and disrupts the general flow of the disc, overall its a pleasant performance ranging from ballads, to hard rock, to some metal moments. She has basically dropped the opera style vocals, and is using her normal tone (if you will).
With all due respect, I must say that she will most likely gain many new fans with this CD, and this album is definitely in MY comfort zone. I really like what she's done on this record, and I can't wait to hear what she'll do next. You GO, Tarja! Are you saying that nobody can post anything negative about Tarja without it turning "into a slam Tarja thread"?
The quality of her new album is well below anything NW has done, musically or lyrically. The videos (which play a huge part in generating album sales) are horrifically bad.
It really does not matter who was the driving force behind this solo effort; the only thing her potential audience will see/hear is something far outside of their musical comfort zone, and she is the face of this sound.
This is not bashing Tarja, it is bashing what she has done.

Not trying to start an argument here, Jason, but just want to clear something up. She really, really wanted to start a career along this path for some time and stuck it out with NW due to many different pressures. This really is what she wanted and it just came about awkwardly. Shame for all the bad feelings that resulted, but in the end, no one has been forced into a situation they didn't want. Tuomas never really envisioned her type of vocals for his music and she always felt awkward in the metal role. This is so good for all, it's just a shame better communication didn't make it happen in a better way.
So be it. I'm happy for her and them and love seeing the resulting recordings. It's all good in the end.
I see her playing to 2,000 seat theaters in the USA in 2008, at least. We all have opinions. I do not see Tarja playing to 50,000 seat arenas any time soon.

DPP was written prior to Tuomas knowing who the singer would be. Unless you meant that he is currently doing thatI keep feeling that Tuomas is writing around Annette's limitations as a vocalist.
OK, cool. How about the Masquerade, for example? I wouldn't describe that joint as a shithole, by any means. That would be great, but I don't think it's realistic at all if you are talking about promoting her solo material. More than likely, the fan demand would be more inline for the smaller, shithole venues that she despised when touring the USA. I'd be shocked if she came to the USA anytime soon (several years), unless she lands a role in an opera or something like that. Nightwish may be able to sell out a few of the larger venues like BB Kings or House of Blues, but Tarja drawing 2,000 fans a night in the USA to see her solo act isn't something I can see happening. For perspective, the PP venue in Atlanta is about 1,500 capacity.
