will you still buy their baked beans ?

Being a fan of Dick Smith's buy Australian (manufactured and owned), I eat Dick Butter and condiments out of principal.

I guess that I'll have to stop buying SPC beans if they sell out.

I probably would. Will they still be buying their navy beans from Australian suppliers? I would imagine so, and regardless of who owns it there will still be money flowing into the local economy, so yeah. If they shut down all the plants and moved them to Korea, though, that would be different. It's easy to be idealistic about foreign ownership, but as long as they're still employing Australians, using Australian grown-produce and they're not poisoning our lungs with asbestos, it's ok by me. I still eat Arnott's biscuits and Vegemite.

Perhaps your boyfriend should wash more often.

I cant say I'm looking forward to Diet Vanilla Baked Beans though.

But in al seriousness...I couldn't care less who owns SPC, be it Aussies or Seppo's. I buy baked beans about once every 10 months, so I think my shame in sending money outside of the country will be controllable if it's only 90c every 10 months.

On the other hand, I dont buy any Dick Smith products anyway so keeping it Aussie has never really been a driving force in my consumer habits.

He should just stick to hot air ballooning or selling electrics that he imports from Japan.

Dick Smith hasn't sold electronics for decades. He sold all that to Woolworths back in the 80s. For our part, Xena and I buy a lot of local produce when we shop, but realistically it's actually quite difficult to avoid "sending your money overseas" when you're a consumer. My main concern when I buy anything is whether or not it's any good, followed by where it comes from. I've bought dates that were grown in Iran and who knows where some of the petrol you buy comes from? I admire Smith's support of Australian growers and producers but realistically even the big multi-nationals with operations in Australia still use them and probably buy more from them than what Smith does. Even McDonalds in the US buys Aussie beef. The Japanese still buy car engines made in Adelaide. It annoys me when the entire thrust of a company's marketing is that they're owned and made in Australia. "Nurofen Plus is made overseas. On the other hand, Herron is made right here in Australia, so the profits stay in Australia." So fucking what? The profits are still going to a pharmaceutical company with directors rolling in money, so what's difference? Nurofen Plus works better than Herron, so I'll buy that.

Gorey,
I agree pretty much with everything that you've posted here.

I'll never buy vegemite again, on principal that they tried to get the breweries to sign up to exclusivity agreements with their waste yeast, to prevent Dick from getting it.

I've been a fan of SPC for ages, as when they were going down the shit-chute, the employees took a pay cut to keep the company running. At which they were very successful.

But to allow the take-over, the board has to rewrite their constitution which currently states that no individual shall own more than 20% of the shares.

Dick Smith is a tool.

My buying habits are dictated 100% by taste and price... I don't care where something is made, as long as it takes good and doesn't cost me my first-born son. Although having said that I don't buy that much, since I don't live on my own and I don't cook...

But Dick Smith is a fucking moron.

Blitzy,
this is gonna make your day.

Go to Bilo, and pick up a can of bilo baked beans. Check out the nutritional information on the back, and then compare it to the other brands.

They are identical to SPC (or at least the batch in the Lithgow shop was last time we bought them). They may change suppliers depending on contracts 'though.

That's insane! o_O

Not in my mind.

Kraft tried to get the breweries to sign up to sell yeast exclusively to them, denying any opposition the raw materials to compete against them.

That's plain wrong, and I won't support companies that play dirty like that.

Im eating Vegemite sandwiches for lunch right now. Now I feel like a commy fascist pig after what Shannow said.

But... it IS Vegemite, like Sydo said :worship:

Strange if Bi-Lo beans are made by SPC, as they taste quite a lot different.

Vegemite is interesting. It tastes like crap, yet everyone likes it. I myself love it, but I still think, in reality, it tastes pretty bad. It's probably because most people were brought up on it. Either way, it kicks the shit out of Promite and all other poser mites.
