If I wanted to get into the mixing/producing field...

What should I be doing? By that I mean, what should I take in university or college? Do I have to already have knowledge about the methods and technology? Is it even worth learning from a financial point of view (i.e. would I be able to make any kind of living at it)? Currently I know nothing of mixing or producing, but I do find it interesting, and it's something I think I would enjoy doing. I just don't know where to start.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I've had absolutely no experience, since I haven't had any opportunity to. Seems to me that an apprenticeship is the only real way to learn the skills involved, but I don't have that option at the moment unfortunately.
