I sometimes feel the same way. I just don't want to put on something too challenging because big, epic, emotional avant-garde stuff can get stale if you play it too much, sometimes it is too 'deep' and original for its own good. Sometimes you need a quick fix...some nice shallow melodic metal or rock. I feel that you don't HAVE to be avant-garde and all 'deep' to be a good band, they just fulfill different requirements and moods. Farmakon for example aren't exactly the biggest innovators ever, but what they try and do they do well, with a nice personal touch to it.
Actually, I don't put on Maudlin too often because I don't want to spoil it (kind of done that to Opeth, thrashed it wayyyy too much now I'm paying for it).
