My dad recently took my record player on his last visit because he has old records that require 78rpm speed settings, and my turntable could handle that. So now I am record player-less.

Also, I have now bought a 120GB hard disk to store my albums (thanks lurch).

I'm thinking about the following items:

This is $100, and comes with the cartridge. Shipping is $6.

And one of these (silver):

$120 each (includes shipping). 512Mb and runs on a single AAA.

Any other ideas, or am I good to go?

I think the inherently badass RC color scheme is fucking with me peepers, or I'm just color blind. o_O

specific color names = specific subgenre names

cool so now you and my friend bought the same 120 gig HD ... need to get one also.

as far as the turntable, if it's Technics ... go for it.
Denon also makes one I believe for about $160 that is uber cool.

Although I must say the best budget audiophile turntables are the REGA.

Check the P2, and P3 models on that site ... might be a little more pricey, but if you ever want to sell them, you'll get your money back.

Dude... don't spend $120 on a 512mb MP3 player. Spend 300 on a 15 gig iPod. The newer models (which is what I speak of) are a lot more reliable than the first ones. If it fucks with you, you can get a new one for free.

And in case anyone is wondering why I bother with these, I travel frequently and it's a lot easier for have ALL of my music in a little metal box than to carry around my 100 CDs.

OK I shall look into this Rega - I've heard good things. Technics etc could be slight overkill for the amount of use it would get -- I certainly don't need direct drive for scratching like a hip hop DJ :loco: A simple, yet slick looking, belt drive turntable will do me fine.

Yeah, we had a whole 5 page thread on this just the other day. :) I travel as well, which is why I'm going to start ripping MP3s, but I figure it doesn't make sense to spend $3-400 on an iPod. Even when taking 10 CDs with me every week, I would only listen to 4 or 5 of them.

I went with the option of having the 120Gb hard drive (dedicated for everything I can imagine - MP3s , pics, RC site backup, etc), plus a small MP3 player that I can just keep rotating music on every week. I'm actually thinking of regressing and getting a $50-$60 MP3 player, so the whole thing, including the 120Gb disk, would cost me no more than $170 - $180.

The whole MP3 thing is such a trap. Why spend $100 on 512MB when you can spend $150 on 1Gb? Then why spend $150 for 1Gb when you can spend $240 on 20Gb? Then why spend $240 on 20Gb when you can spend $400 on 40Gb? Etc. o_O

So I figured hard disk + small MP3 player was the way to go for my needs. Plus if I lose/break the MP3 player, I still have everything on the 120Gb hard disk.

OK, but why pay $120 for 512 Mb when you can pay $30 for an MP3 discman and fit 700 Mb onto each disc (and carry several discs with you no less?)

hehe ... Technics doesn't just make the $400 1200 model Dj unit ... they make some budget $150 ones.

That Rega P3 with all the gay colors does look good though ... get one to match your gay colored MP3 player :loco:

But this one is a good choice ... http://www.123dj.com/turntable/technics/bd200.html
$100 including cartridge ... I sold these in the heydays. They are so good, then never changed this model for I think 15 years now.
Do I have to find everything for you? :loco:

From my perspective, because it's a pain in the arse :) It may not seem it, but I did that for five years - had a chunk of my CD collection on MP3 disks which I used to carry around with me. And always having to carry them around can be a pain if you want to travel light, plus no matter how well you treat them they get scratched eventually.

I just changed to a 1gb player with a 200gb external a few weeks back, and it feel so liberating to only have to carry an MP3 player the size of a pen drive around (that weighs 28 grams) rather than a bulky discman with a CD case :)

Russell hit the nail here, but I no longer want to carry a discman and CD carrycase with me wherever I go. I used to have one, and it was cool considering how much you can squeeze on to a CD-R, but it's still a bulky fucker.

You're right though, it makes absolutely no sense in paying $120 for an MP3 player. I haven't really researched it but I could probably get something simple for $50. Sure, it's still a little more than the discman, but the convenience of having this little gadget tucked into a pocket is cool.

@lurch - I like you finding stuff for me. It makes me feel special and loved.

This Technics deal could be excellent. It's actually not too easy to find in the US, so for $100...and it includes the cartridge? I'll call them up tomorrow and ask about shipping prices. Right now, their on-line ordering method suggests that they'll contact me with shipping price AFTER I make the order....yeah right.

Or you could pay ~$300 for a 40GB iRiver that also plays videos, as well as playing more audio formats such as OGG and WMA

$300 for an iRiver.

Or,

$120 for 120GB
$50 for MP3 player
$100 for Technics Turntable
$30 for some new vinyl (like The Mantle and Slough Feg/Solstice 7" split!!)

It is a good unit, like i said that particular model was never changed for at least 12-15 years. Used to be around $179 back in the days. You cannot go wrong with it for the price.

Ah, but an inherently inferior MP3 player.

When it comes to MP3 playback, is there such a thing as inferiority? It's all 1's and 0's at the end of the day. :loco:

Yeah, it's a done deal pretty much. I just want to know what the shipping is. Checking turntables on eBay and some of them are just beautiful. Old Duals etc from the late 60's / early 70's going for cheap. Thing is, it's like classic cars, you have to be really dedicated in the maintenance. I saw one turntable that went for about $7000 -- it was a work of art.
