I did an interview with Skywest Airlines in Salt Lake City on Monday. At the end, they offered me a job. This is very cool for several reasons. First, I was the least experienced pilot in the group of 10 interviewees by 50%. Second, it was stressful as hell preparing for the interview (it was pretty challenging). Third, this is my first choice airline and they are pretty much known as the best regional airline to work for.

The downside is that they offered me training in the plane I did not want. I'd love to fly the plane, but it is only based on the west coast. That means that every week I will have to commute to the west coast for work. That will eat into my days off pretty significantly, and it may be expensive for me. However, it is only for 1 year. At that point, I can transition to the plane I want and fly out of Chicago.

There's a small chance that they will allow me to go to the training for the plane I really want, which would let me fly out of Chicago pretty much from day 1. I have to wait and see though.

Hah! Cool! Congrats!
Skywest is part of/partner with Midwest Airlines, IIRC and my preferred airline of choice when travelling. The company I work for does a lot of biz w/Midwest as well as Skywest....

Very good job, Mike! That is so awesome. I know this was a long time coming and you put lots of time in to it. Best of luck in getting that plane out of Chicago!

awesome news, Mike! Congratulations, and I hope you get to fly out of Chicago... I can't imagine spending a week at a time away from home for my job.

Wow, that's awesome news! Free flights courtesy of Yippee for everybody!!!!

What kind of plane were you hoping for, and what kind did you (pardon the pun) 'land'? I take it these are regional prop planes?

Congradulations on the job. How would it be expensive? don't airlines put you up if you have to go somewhere overnight and give you an ad-diem?

At first I will be on reserve, which means on call. That means I have to be available at my base within two hours. So I have to have a place to stay in that city. Add the cost of that to the mortgage we've already got, and it gets expensive.

I was hoping for the Canadair Regional Jet, and I've been offered the Embraer EMB 120 "Brasilia". The Brasilia is a turbo-prop. It's a neat airplane and I'd love to fly it. I just wish I could do it out of Chicago. Of course the jet is cool too, but in the jet it's all auto-pilot. In the turbo-prop, it's all hand flying.

Congrats! Half our Christmas flights were on Skywest (as partners with United) on little planes and they were great flights from a tired/harried/stressed passenger point of view. :)

Congratulations Mike, that is awesome. Guess what? Skywest is a major carrier here in El Paso, so there is a huge chance you maybe flying into here, and if that is the case just let me know, and we will have you over for dinner and such.

He did get the plane he wanted! He's has a chance to fly out of OHare and he starts class on the 28th.

We're a little out of our minds with excitement! I always have a big candle party on my birthday to celebrate and we were so excited that his interview was timed perfectly so that we could also be celebrating his new job as a pilot and now we are for sure!!!!!!
