I'm tracking a 7 piece kit tonight.

good luck man! Im faced with the same obstacle. I have opted to remove a couple pieces from my own kit, but other bands are less compromising.

what genre of music is it? Im guessing death metal?
I usually trigger bass drums to free up inputs. I prefer having a top and bottom snare track to having real kicks, but I could see how it may be better for some players / genres to get real kick performances, and use samples to fill out the snare sound.

what are your thoughts on this? are you able to trigger as well?

I'm going:

D6/ D6 : both kicks
57 for the top of the snare
e609 for the bottom of the snare
3x 57 for the first 3 toms
1x D112 for the floor
2x audix f15 (yeah, I wish I had nicer here) for the OH.

Thankfully he doesn't have a fuck ton of cymbals.

Depending on how it goes I may trigger stuff, but I would like to keep it somewhat natural and blend in samples. But we will see.... Depends on how good this kit tracks.

I've never understood this double kick drum nonsense. Just get a 7 piece kit with one kick and get a double kick pedal!

Less money spent on kick heads, less stuff to take to gigs and recording sessions, less tuning to do... Chances are the kicks are all gonna be sample replaced anyway to be honest!

Oh but wait, double kick setups look so much cooler!

Posing bastards in my opinion, if he's the kind of overcompensating drummer that normally play double kick kit's then chances are he'll be shit and won't touch half the toms, leaving all your effort miking up his monster kit's a total waste. If so then it looks like you're in for one hell of a session.

I mixed this band and did a live recording for them. From what I remember they weren't bad at all, very LoG sounding. It was their singer's first show with them too so I'd assume they have gotten better.

Also, double kicks are teh gay

Double kick pedals kind of suck. The left pedal never feels even half as good as the right. You can't do really intricate footwork since you are ideally trying to push all the force forward, but there is a foot or more of space from the pedal to the actual beater. Two kicks is the shit, but not as practical.

While double kicks do indeed suck, I fucking LOATH assholes with more than 3-4 toms or more than 2 snares.

Why?

Because that extra floor or rack tom usually ends up getting hit MAYBE one time during the song. Was it really necessary?

I say no.

If you can't play it on a 4 piece with a double kick pedal then you might as well just pack it in.

I'm not thrilled about the whole deal (other than how interesting it will be), but the guy is 29 and I have a feeling this has been his kit for a while (just looking at his myspace page).

Well, it's their music, so I'd say it does not matter if you think it is necessary or not. In most cases it will be worth it.

I would like to hear how it sounds to record samples of the whole kit and blend in at least 3 at the same time :D So for every drum hit it would be the original recording + 3 samples

It would require a lot of samples though :P

As you can see, pretty bad . The snare actually sounded ok, the kicks rang out to much and the toms were pretty bad. The cymbals had some cracking, so I'm going 100% superior/SSD on this.

It was pretty rad to work with though.

i loved doodled on drum heads

i should take you guys a picture of the kit i have to play at college for foetus in a jar jams, any guys with good taste in cymbals, drums and drum heads would probably burst into tears at the thought of using any of that shit.
