What are you're opinions on iMacs? Either the newer models with an i5 or the older dual core ones, what do you guys think about them for music production?

I would look at the Mac Mini series and a cheaper monitor. I use a 32" LCD TV personally. The iMacs are good, but expensive because of the included display, speakers, camera, etc. The iMacs and Minis have comparable specs, and the Mini RAM is simple to upgrade.

Not quite. The mac mini server is the only one with a quad core, and it's $999. You can get an iMac refurb (the only way to go with Apple imo) with a 2.5 G quad core i5 (.5 G more than the mini) which comes with a display and more ports, etc. for the EXACT SAME price.

I have a 21.5" iMac with the 2.8G i7 quad, and it's fucking amazing. You could totally get by with a refurb for close to a grand and have a smoking machine. I paid 1700 for mine when they first came out with the quads last year, as I HAD to get a new comp at the time. I love the screen and everything else about it.

I have 27 " i7 , I had the HD removed and put in a caddy for (samples etc) and an SSD drive as a replacement which just runs logic and third party plugs . We tested a very large project which a friends 2 year old mac tower was struggling with and it ran without a hitch . The thing if fucking quick now !

I ve upgraded to 27" i7 and it is great! It is impossible to overload it even in extremly big and complicated sessions I now have all my master fader filled with all plugs I used to have in a seperate project for mastering. Now I have mastering right inside a mixing session and I can easily switch them on and off every time I need. And supreme design and noisyness are also great features! I can track vocals right in the control room with headphones and there is no noise even when you sit right at the desk, it's great! Get it you will never go wrong with it! And you can always sell it for a good price even after several years when it will become outdated which you can not say about PCs!
