After 15 years in existence and having 8 studio albums under their bullet-belts, Impaled Nazarene have finally decided that it's time to release a document of their live performances. For most other bands, the live album is an opportunity to hear a best-of collection culled from a meagre back catalogue, performed sloppily and with a crappy live mix. For Impaled Nazarene, the live environment is the perfect way to experience this punk-encrusted, hard drinking, violent black metal outfit, and Death Comes... works for all the reasons that a normal live album fails.

For instance, the somewhat raggedy performance of the band for the first three tracks or so before they really find their groove just seems perfectly right for a band who are widely renowned to be the drunkest extreme metal outfit ever. Who cares that the guitars on 'The Horny And The Horned' seem at times to be racing to keep up with the drums? That simply adds to the urgency and unpredictability of the raging, bulging-vein metallic fury of the song! The live mix, too, manages to add an extra element of raw, grinding atmosphere to the high-velocity blasting throughout 'Motorpenis', particularly the truly gnarly bass guitar rumbling. Even the vocalist stretching his vocal chords to breaking point during the eye-poppingly rabid screaming that accompanies the beginning of 'Kohta Ei Naura Enaa Jeesuskaan' adds to the sheer exhileration that listening to this record brings.

Of course, it would all fall down if the songs were a bunch of crap, but luckily Impaled Nazarene have never really stilted on the songwriting aspect either. The squalling pinch harmonics in 'The Horny And The Horned''s lead guitar lines, the furious riffage throughout 'Endless War', the machine-gun double-kicks in 'The Maggot Crusher' - it's all here, performed with rabid intensity in front of an appreciative crowd. If you're a fan of Impaled Nazarene, this is an essential release, and if you're interested in seeing what they're like, it serves as a pretty good introduction too.
