Important Dynamic Range

Wich genre was he talking about? I agree if he talks about blues, jazz or classical or something, but metal kicksass when squashed!!

Everyday people complain about the loss of dynamic on modern rock, but really doubt that if these people were releasing an album today, they would choose to do not clip it.

I mean, take Motorhead as an example, as they are a very old band and keep releasing albums in the exact same music style for years. Compare the track RAMONES from the album 1926 (1991) with the track In The Name Of Tragedy from the album Inferno (2004).

If you were releasing an album today, would you REALLY ask for the producer to make it like 1991? My answer is hell no.

I would certainly choose not to clip and squash it. I know how to do it, and at the risk of blowing my own horn I think I can do it well enough to get by if I were to have to at some point, but I would still opt for a more 'classic' production if I had to make the choice.

Cases in point? Number of the Beast or Powerslave against Brave New World - I like them all a lot but nothing beats the sound on the old stuff. Stained Class against Angel of Retribution. Awake against Systematic Chaos. Rust in Peace against... fuck it, anything. Focus. Human. Covenant. Low. I can say beyond any shadow of a doubt that there are a lot of 80s and 90s productions that I'd still take over the stuff available now.
