Well, I don't really understand the dislike about Bergstrand's mixes.
This guy is VEEEERY good at mixing metal in a special way : he has a signature sound, and adds a lot of creative ideas to his mixes, and that's what makes his work so special.
The albums he engineered have a real mojo to me, not sounding always the same, with that same 200 kish snare sample, etc. Sometimes I don't really "like" his mixes, but they sound so unique that I get really interested in how he did that, and it gives a special depth to the music, something that will be heard on ONE album of ONE band.
Andy Sneap, Colin Richardson or let's say Tue Madsen are all killers at mixing metal music too, but they do it in their own way, and you know sometimes I think "damn, that's nearly the same sound as the previous album". Bergstrand has a creative thing I don't find as much in other great sounding metal mixes. His production style always try to fit the music.
I heard that he tries to not use samples when it is possible. His drums are quantized to the grid, with some drum hit replacement when needed, but he works a lot with ambience mics, guitar amp blendings, tons of EQ and compression... Sometimes it sounds weird but it's unique. This guy has tons of artistic ideas.
