In search of specific tips about tuning guitar/bass when recording

What location on the guitar are you guys generally putting the earplugs?

I'll post a pic at some point, but generally I put them parallel to a single string at the last fret on the freboard. Allows me to mute multiple strings without affecting the non muted strings at all.

Tune/play for the part. Most people record riff-by-riff anyway. Look at each section as it's own separate thing and play/tune accordingly. I usually have issues with fretting too hard on fast shit.
