There is NO reason why INFERNO should not have been on the radio in the USA. It is far better than Nu Metal and just as hard driving. Even the vocals fit the genre. Sym X are a fine group of musicians and VERY talented. Hope they tour again soon.

Perhaps I should call up the closest thing we have to a metal station up, and request inferno like 4 times per day, till they get the hint.

www.wccc.com - they play some good stuff like Priest, Maiden, even heard DT there a couple times. Independent station - not clear channel as well =).

I wonder what would happen if all us forumers bugged the stations to play SX? ....

It wouldn't work. Here's a scenario that would happen:

Mindless Radio Fan: Hey, who's this band?

Me: Symphony X.

Mindless Radio Fan: What's that terrible squeaky sound?

Me: That's a guitar solo.

Mindless Radio Fan: I hate it.

Me: *commits suicide*

The song on The Odyssey that would do best on the radio is Frontiers. It's a damn shame they didn't put it on the full version.

However, it doesn't really represent the band's sound very well. That would most likely lead to many commercial idiots buying The Odyssey and becoming disappointed with it.

I think that Champion of Ithaca taken on its own would have made a good choice...it has that affirming chorus, it's very catchy, and I think it would be cool to release the final section of a 20-minute plus track as a single...Yes actually did that once.

Not a good idea. That part alone sounds too much like Rainbow's Street of Dreams. I like it myself, but someone might pass it off as a rip-off.

The thing about popular music is, no matter what it is, the majority of people will eat it up. There's always some shitty new fad coming out (Nu-Metal, these neo rock bands, Evanescence), and I'd hate for Symphony X to be in that group. Just another band a bunch of people like because it's played on the radio 24/7 and then gone in a year.

Damn right!.....

Honestly, as great a song as "Inferno" is, I still don't see it being played on any mainstream "New Rock Alternative" radio stations in this country. It just doesn't fit the cookie cutter format of every song out there right now and I don't think it would be accepted.

My choice for the SyX song that would most likely be accepted by the radio crowd would be "King of Terrors". It's heavy with the catchy chorus. Although the odd time drum rythm in the parts right before the verses might throw some people for a loop.

Yea - Inferno is 5 mins long. nowadays songs are 2-2.5 mins long, because there boring and dragging them on longer would bore people- which is why it IS possibly to have a 14 track cd cover 36 minutes, and none of it is listenable.

WOW, this thread got a lot of discussion.

I am affiliated with some people in the business that know alot about US radio. Here is how it works:

Almost all radio stations in the US are owned by the top 5 communication companies. They will only put into rotation what the label wishes to "push" or "pay". They pay the Company and it gets into rotation and begins to sell. It is reported that it takes about 300,000.00 for a 6 week rotation. BUT, this comes out of the bands royalty...about 12%. The payoff is masked as "promotion" or some other "label" in the books.

So if a band sells 1 million copies they are rich? Not at all. Because it COST a ton of money to get the sales. They might make out OK from the publishing, but the actual sales......NOTHING. Payola exists today worse than ever, do to the virtual monopolizing of these communication companys.

Sym X are probably better off with their own small devoted fanbase. They will do fine if they contiunue to tour and take care of their fans.

I am with a new Prog-label and we are seeking bands. We are a small outfit but we have world wide distribution. I am an artist and this label is to give a good, fair shot to hard working, high quality bands. We are looking for artists from prog related genres.

Check us out and spread the word.

I really think that Frontiers would do well on the radio. Wicked would be next, just because of the cool groove. However, the chorus to that one isn't "mainstream catchy", so I don't know...

Agreed. They'd have to do some chopping, though (it's about 6:20). I'd say cutting off some of the intro and parts of the solo section would size it up nicely for radio play. And yes, the chorus is catchy. Very.

I did a test on some college buddies when they came in from Xmas break. They all listen to mainstream crap.

I played 3 songs. They have no idea what bands these are mind you.

1st song - Kissing the Shadows by Children of Bodom
General Opinion - Way to fastpaced for me.(wussies) I can't understand him at all.(who cares did you hear that solo?

2nd Song - Enemies of Reality by Nevermore
General Opinion - Too heavy.(again wussies) Are these guys satanists?(morons)

3rd Song - Out of the Ashes by Symphony X
General Opinion - The intro was cool.(thank god) I like the singer hes really good, I got the meaning of the song.(about time) Its a very catchy tune.(yur damn right it is.)

I acctually got a burn request. I said if you like it that much then go forth and buy a cd please.

Final Analysis. If Symphony X is played on the radio, people will like accept them I think, and I think the general opinion will be rather good.

I am sorry, but we have to accept that radio has lost the way and shall never find it again. The only channel I can listen to is the classical station, and all the others blast the dissonant, aleatoric "music" of rap-metal bands that should do us a favor and kill themselves. When idiots at my school put on linkin park (not capitalized because of excessive dishonor), I simply take refuge in putting on my headphones and listening to some honorable metal, such as Symphony X, Blind Guardian, or Manowar. This is the only way. One ray of hope is stations with a Pay For Play, where they charge per minute of a song you request but play anything you would like. Had I the money, I would play V, DWOT, and the Odyssey, all the way through, back to back. If this does not change the ways of the infidels, at least the honor will overwhelm them and cause a deadly anurysm.
