Input Level of DI/Pre-amp Before Impulses

Hey guys, I have been messing around using Impulses with my pre-amp, and also using the Wagner Plug-in with Impulses

I was wondering, How hot of signal should i be recording my DI or Pre-Amp at before Applying Amp Modeling or Impulse plug-ins?

i find that recording at lower volumes ( such as -18 to -12 ) and then raising the track fader, or the output on my reamp box sounds a little better to my ears.
