Buy it from a chain store that will except returns! I don't know what you guys have in the UK, but I know Guitar Center in the US will let you return stuff, same with Long and McQuade here... I just returned a Saffire Pro 26 i/o that I bought at the end of December with no problems whatsoever. If not, then your best bet is to buy something used and then resell it because 90% of the time you can get back what you paid for it when selling gear you bought used... You'll definitely lose less money then you would by buying new and then selling!
In the 300 pound range used, you should be able to get a Firepod or something, I don't know how badly you guys get raped on the exchange compared to us in North America but 300 pound is basically what, 700-750 Canadian? That'll get you a Saffire Pro or a Firestudio brand new here so you should definitely be able to score something decent used!
