Involution Truth Be Told
Self-released Demo 2004
By Russell Garwood
Northern Irelands Involution play well executed, but somewhat derivative rock. Metal influences are present, as are distinct grunge leanings. Melodic guitars provide a memorable backing for the honest singing, at time reminiscent of Eddie Vedder, and at others of Creeds Scott Stapp. In tune, and showing a solid rock tone, these are effective and fitting, one of the highlights on Truth Be Told. Occasional heavier sections show riffage and muting in the guitars, as well as solos, while sporadic shouting offers variety in the vocal department. The bass is driving and prominent, with disciplined drumming completing a tight rhythm section. The four songs on this demo are well thought out, with memorable tunes, good dynamic change, intelligent use of samples, and varied structures. Other influences include Tool, A Perfect Circle, Pearl Jam and perhaps Alice In Chains.
Truth Be Told is a very impressive demo. Good production marks the band apart from their contemporaries, and professional packaging is a bonus. This all suggests Involution have a very bright future. Presently they can lack individuality, feeling like an albeit well constructed amalgamation of their greater influences. The more contemplative moments show inklings of a distinctive feel. With time, I am confident the five will find their own identity, and with the musical talent already on display, they should become a force to be reckoned with.
