Is there a reason?

They either want to rip off The King, they want to look like they are going to war, or they want to look like they have the plague. Usually one of the three.

Cradle of Filth just want to advertise how gay they are, but they are not black metal.

Real corpse paint is just supposed to be white faced, with some black around the eyes. Any more is doing it wrong.
Unless you put spikes and inverted crosses. THEN IT IS PAINT IN THE NAME OF SATAN.
The Filth boys mistook it for vampirism and hence the queer music. Vampire people are creepy.

I dunno. If some chick wanted to bite my neck and drink my blood, I'd consider it.

Why do people compare Dimmu Borgir, Immortal and Emperor to Cradle of Shit?

hahaha.

Anyway!

Emperor and Immortal stopped being black metal; went to extreme and thrashy arctic(?), respectively.

I remember Trapped labelled DB gothic thrash; I liked that!
Not sure if their old material was BM, though. Doubt it..

It only becomes elitism-bitchy because there is a LOT of real black metal. It is a distinct and well-established genre.

A lot of more modern bands just enjoy the way it looks and emulate it in some different-genre-kind-of-way.

Something that really bothers me:

People who listen to one genre of music exclusively. People that do this seem to be predominantly metal fans. It's contrived madness.

Yep.

I know Dimmu, Emperor and Immortal stopped playing tr00 black metal, but their music is hardly commercial. I love the traditional black metal sound, but I don't get how technical musicianship, complex and heavy/aggressive songs are commercial. I had an easier time getting into Darkthrone and Xasthur than I did getting into later Mayhem, Immortal and Dimmu. It pisses me off when people keep comparing them to Gaydle.

For All Tid was definitely BM. It had a very NSBM sound but the band wasn't racist. Stormblast would have had a more tr00 sound if their shitty label didn't make them go to a terrible recording studio. Even Fenriz wanted to sign them but Nuclear Blast came along and the did Enthroned Darkness Triumphant and on.
I think the second bonus track on the re-recording had a very Dark Funeral kind of sound, but the song was written before the For All Tid days from what I read.

eh?
Through my observations and research, I've found that metal heads can be just as open minded in their listening palette as anyone else. (research extending into band members)
People that predominately practice the single genre method, I would say, are the general populous. They just absorb the radio/TV's content. So, pop.

I never said metal heads were not open minded when it came to listening to different genres.

Only that, if you ever meet some bonehead who refuses to listen to any other genre, they are usually metal fans.

In my experience, anyhoo.
