Is there any consensus regarding the "regular" snare MIDI note? 38 (D2) or 40 (E2)?

38 inside PT. Weird though, I always thought 38 in Tux/GP5 sounded kinda 80s synth sounding and 40 more authentic? Though, non of what is written on tab goes into PT the same.

When I'm writting MIDI or programming samplers I always use 38, as the traditional GM states that 38 is the acoustic snare while 40 is an electric snare.

However I've received lots of MIDI files from bands using 40 for snare and was wondering if there is any kind of consensus on this matter.

I've just checked the MIDI grooves that comes with Steven Slate Drums Player and they all use 38. Native Instruments Studio Drummer MIDI grooves use 38 for ghost notes and 39 :)guh:) for regular hits. Guitar Pro users are also divided.

I wish there was an agreement. Put it on the bro code or whatever.

Most of the time 40 is the rimshot. Being a metal production forum, no surprises that you're coming across that usage a lot of the time!

I was using 40 till I record some drums! So now 38 everytime ;)
An advice if you want some hard hit, sometimes using 40+38 on the same hit can do the trick
