try micing outside of what you're used to.
the rules change inside a box.
if you want to remove the boxines you have to do it through trial and error.
moving the mic away from the center, deeper eq cuts than normal etc.
different mic choices sometimes.
I used a 421 on most of those clips but the best tone I ever got out of one was with a pzm laying on the baffle and lots of eq

I see what you're saying it is a totally different game when using the box. I was just experimenting here, with the lid on, with a blanket inside and with the lid off. Unfortunately it sounds best with the lid off, thus defeating the purpose .....

mine sounded boomier with the lid open for some reason, definitely not better though

try putting a 57 about 2" from the outside edge of the cone, on axis or a hair or two off

then hp-lp @ say.... 100hz and 4k

season to taste
