It's Done

Running Wild- No offense to their fans, but they simply aren't headline material here in the States. Yes, they have a cult following that would be vocal. However, I don't think they have even the appeal of Rage and we all know what happened there.

I've gotta comment on this...and I am not a Running Wild fan...or even a big Rage fan, for that matter, but.....

Was Rage really that big of a downer? I thought they came and slammed...

Truth be told...my group left after 6 songs or so...cuz we were tired and not big fans, anyway...but I still think they rocked. Since then...I've become more of a fan...and kinda regret leaving...

Kinda feel the same way about Nightwish as well...

Oh well...rock on!

Ok so I misplaced my web software, so here's what I would throw into the mix of the thread. It won't be as pretty as the above, but use your imagination;

Bruce Dickinson
Iron Savior
Dream Evil
Epica
Divinefire

Helloween
At Vance
Jeff Scott Soto
Dragonforce
Oratory

I thought this was interesting and different. Bruce I think would be cool since he's been one of the inspirations for over 1/2 of the bands that we listen to. I liked when Rage played, they've been around a long time, and I think it would be cool to have a band like that often. Saxon could be another one.

I was having a hard time picking 3rd slot bands especially after the 1-2 punch of Tad Morose / Brainstorm last year. I think JSS would win over. Dream Evil may be hit or miss based on cheese factor, but I think they'd leave an impression like Silent Force did with their performance (even though they played 2nd).

I'm guessing Epica & JSS would be the oddballs.

Actually, It's not my wishlist. I was just playing with graphics software.
To review though...
Gamma Ray: If you'll bring them back, I'll sponsor them.
Running Wild: I'd like to see them, but they're not on the top of my list by any means.
Shadow Gallery: I'm not a big Prog fan. I've never really heard much of them, but they get great reviews.
Edenbridge: I like them, but I'd crash after about 30 mins.
Falconer: How does a band go down in ranking the more albums they put out? Maybe you don't like the newer stuff/singer, but surely a 1 album band couldn't have rated a 3rd spot to start with.
Paragon: "Your power metal fanboyitits is showing. Ugh." You bet yer ass buddy. This is about ProgPOWER isn't it?
Pyramaze: I know the album gets rave reviews, but they don't do much for me.
Battle Lore: Just thrown in as the Odd Ball.
Persuader: THAT's a serious pick. But Paragon gets an "Ugh" while Persuader is a "Good choice?" Wazzup with dat?
Black Symphony: A shame they're always in a state of turmoil. With some stability they could have been pretty big. I'd like to see them, and yes, Tears Of Blood is an essential CD.

Nice logo.

I realize it's more of a personal wishlist, but it was cool of you to put the effort into that. Allow me to comment:

Gamma Ray- Great headliner and will sell tickets based on their name alone.

Running Wild- No offense to their fans, but they simply aren't headline material here in the States. Yes, they have a cult following that would be vocal. However, I don't think they have even the appeal of Rage and we all know what happened there.

Shadow Gallery- Waiting on hell to freeze over regardless of what the interviews say.

Edenbridge- This one lost me. Don't get me wrong as I loved the last album. However, 90 minutes? Hell, they opened for Manticora in many countries on the Angra European tour. That should give you an idea of their drawing power alone. Record sales here in the States are non-existant. I actually tried to book them once and couldn't get it done.

Falconer- If it was right after their debut, maybe. Now, this is too high of a spot.

Paragon- Your power metal fanboyitits is showing. Ugh.

Battlelore- Buzz is growing, but I would look at other more popular alternatives with beauty/beast vocals first.

Pyramaze- I'm waiting to hear the second album just like everyone else.

Persuader- Good choice.

Black Symphony- One of my favorite bands. However, even though they are reuniting for a live show, it's with a different vocalist. No word on their future plans yet (although the website teases). "Tears of Blood" is an essential disc IMHO.

I think 99% of the negative comments about Rage's ProgPower appearance had little to do with their performance, and much to do with their reception. I believe, in past posts, Glenn has eluded to the fact that he may have miscalculated their popularity with his audience. However, he can obviously comment on that if he has a chance.

Correct. However, you have to wonder what would have happened if Evergrey had decided not to do the impromptu signing session after their set that night.

So......I'm completely unoriginal and stole from Creeps.

PROG-POWER VII: AS THE PIGS FLY OUTSIDE THE VENUE

Pain Of Salvation Devin Townsend
Ulver Arcturus
Solefald Ark
Spastic Ink Atrox
Subterranean Masquerade Fantômas w/John Zorn and Terry Bozzio

Pre-Party: Mr. Bungle

Just look at it as a discount. Half of those bands can go on one plane, since they're all from Norway.

....this is why I don't run a festival. >_>

Circle II Circle... 1 album band, 3rd slot, owned.

Was also thinking that GRIP INC. would be a great oddball band. Dave's newer material would be a great fit into PP. But he'd still have to play Hostage to Heaven.

Well.....with Arcturus and Ulver making an appearance, that's as far up as I could get them. With all perfect bands.....somebody has to not get as much playing time.

Great set. But I'd hardly call a set of 1/2 CIIC songs and 1/2 Savatage songs w/ Oliva a 1 album show. Looking at it that way WMD was a no album band yet headlined Saturday night at PPV.

Okay... here's my stab, and dammit, I can dream can't I? hehe

Fates Warning
Redemption
(I know.. I'm sick in the head, but it could work)
Dead Soul Tribe: with special guests Norm Leggio, Brian McAlpin and Dan Rock (meaning PsychoticWaltz reunion as the blow your mind event)
Pantommind
Silent Force
(or DC solo)
SunCaged
Lana Lane
Last Crack
Zero Hour
Persephone's Dream
(I said I could dream, didn't I?)

I think the best headliners for next year, that haven't been done yet are:

Sonata Arctica

and that's it.

Seriously though, Glenn's job has to be a lot harder as time goes on, because most of the bands on top of the metal heap today are the same bands that were on top five years ago. Very little new blood has achieved the same level of fame as Stratovarius, Blind Guardian, Edguy, Sonata Arctica, Nightwish, etc.

I don't mind repeats, heck, I'll come and see Edguy and Stratovarius for PPVIII gladly. But I don't know if everyone shares that view.

I would prefer more bands that are a breath of fresh air for the musical world.....Orphaned Land would be that one this year. *hint hint see my list* And there are plenty more where that came from. I do understand that it has to sell tickets though, and I guess Circus Maximus are going to attract a bigger audience than Subterranean Masquerade.

Well, any new blood that is quality is good for Progpower. I think Circus Maximus was a great choice, although in terms of ticket sales I doubt they put any more butts in seats this year than Subterranean Masquerade would. I don't think people decide to buy tickets based on new bands playing 45 minutes. The headliners and the ProgPower experience sell the tickets.

Yeah.....my point is just that I don't consider certain bands booked here to be "a breath of fresh air," although I understand lots of people like them. I'd rather have something new and interesting than what I might consider to be a "Dream Theater are too big so let's get an underground band as much like them as possible" band. So if the openers aren't what's selling the tickets, I'd put something more "progressive" in that slot. But these are just my thoughts, as I said earlier, I don't run the festival and would utterly fail if I was in charge.

Yeah, but if you have too many bands who turn the fans off, it could be damaging. The great thing about Progpower is that there are no "opening acts" that everyone just ignores or puts up with to get to the headliners. Every single band booked has a constituency, and the vast majority win many people over. The only exceptions I can think of are Devin Townsend and Pain of Salvation, which do have a rather sizeable contingent of fans, but failed to really win any new ones. I don't imagine Glenn would want to take chances by having more than one band like that per year.

The consistent quality of the lineup from top to bottom is one of many things that makes Progpower distinct from other festivals. And by quality, I mean the kind of bands that can appeal to a wide array of metal fans. Some of the more creative prog bands are over the heads of all but the most proggy folks. I myself had trouble getting into Dreamscape's End of Silence. Took me five months to finally wrap my head around it. And Dreamscape's a lot more accessible than some of the bands you've mentioned here.

As for Circus Maximus, no, they aren't groundbreaking and they do wear their influences on their sleeve. But they do have an original sound. No one combines prog yet with accessible melodies the way they do. At least no one does it as well.
