Its thinking time people...

Nether Novas is a definate contender.

falling back into the arms - no never
admitting to a life alone - no
claiming there are sparks inside - no
outside looking back - no
so the lie never stopped

Probably the bitterest sounding lines Mikael has delivered.

Another song that comes to mind is Dreamlore Degenerate

Silence the bore, you goddamn whore
You shun the ones you dear
[...]
Why search for endurance
When all is said and done?

The Gallery also sounds quite bitter.

The artistry of living chaos
Is pictured in the poets tears
Because everything burns
The final concept
Is all but a thought away

I almost thought of mentioning Of Chaos and Eternal Night, but that song is pure violence. :p Hedon is too much of a statement, not enough lament. Skydancer on the whole is too fantastical to really qualify.

auctioned, because life seems to be without control in this song, only a piece of furniture sold to the highest bidder. a real bitter song.

aside from those already mentioned, i'd like to add shadwlit façade:

for the dawn shall cast no shadow
from your monolith of lies
descend from the delusion of degradation and despair
for the one that reaps good fortune
on the cost of all good faith
suffering must lead him on amidst his loneliness

rahvin.

first song that came into my mind is Hedon:

how hungry we've become
like animals naked in shame

[...]
crimson masses, sleeped in decadence
holding our tongues to the thirsty sun
so, is the future still open?
[...]
we look at you, afraid
to see what we really are.

i'm too lazy to wait for another song to come into my mind. :p

The question is way to difficult for me to answer... Almost all of the DT's songs are wonderfully bizare and somehow bitter...

I'll choose not from the lyrics, but from the melodies. It is Alone, Lethe, Hedon, Insanity's Crescendo, The Mind's Eye, Auctioned, Day to End, Single Part of Two, White Noise / Black Silence...
Why?
I believe that this question is better to be directed to the band members, who created these songs.
Exuse me, but I just couldn't pick ONE song.

To a Bitter Halt
Why? Because.. well it just.. listen to the song again if you don't agree with me, goddamit :p

And I didn't actually realize the word 'bitter' in the title until now that I wrote it.

I disagree. If I was a band member, I wouldn't much feel like saying "Oh yeah, I was really down when I wrote that song..."

Also, I find that Mikael just never sounds that bitter while singing cleans. I'd agree that the lyrics to Auctioned are quite stunningly bitter, he just doesn't sound bitter enough...

I find that nothing on Skydancer sounds bitter. Its just too magical, as it were, to feel anything as earthly as bitterness... Songs like the Flaming Shades of Fall, Away Delight Away, The Gallery, Lethe, Punish my Heaven all contain moments of bitterness IMO, but none of them are wholely bitter.

For some reason, I don't find TMI a bitter album... Emotionally, its like someone whos moved beyond bitterness to revenge and rage.

Projector is their bitterest sounding album... Just about every song, apart from Therein and Day to End is bitter. To a Bitter Halt and On your time in particular as well as Nether Novas...
Haven is fairly bitter in places - Feast of Burden? Rundown? I fail to believe I'm the first person to mention anything off this album in this thread...

Anyway, my top 5 DT being bitter songs would be the 5 I mentioned above. Damage Done just lacks the same bitter conviction of its predecessors imo - evidently the band are too happy... :p

This is kind of hard for me to answer. I'ld go with Not Built to Last, Auctioned, and Hours Passed in Exile. I'm sure there are more but they aren't coming to me at the moment.

Yeah, and "imo" stands for in metalheads opinion after all, so I am claiming that everyone thinks like I do... dammit, they're onto me again.

Tebus: I thought about Not Built to Last as well... but it seems to be too much of an awesome, almost violent statement of belief for it to be bitter in the same way as Of Chaos... But I can see what you mean

Hours passed in exile!

"What of the time in exile
what of the hours spent?"

A very bitter song to me from beginning to end. I really like the lyrics on that one

I think I have to agree... this is also my favourite DT song so far.

So what if healing takes forever
so what if time is meant for others
so what is left is but a shatter
and what is broken can't be whole

But I really should go and read through all the other lyrics as well... :D No one loves a bitter song more than I do...

The first that come to mind are: Alone, Lethe, Of Melancholy Burning, Nether Novas, Rundown, Emptier Still, The Treason Wall, Hours Passed and many more..

@Wanderingblade: Yeah, that is a good point. By the way, that is actually the first song I ever heard from DT, and I was hooked from the start! So that is a personal favorite of mine, largely for that reason.

Again, Hours possesses too much of a defiant carelessness to be bitter to me... its scorning the outcomes, not being bitter imo.

It is still bitter, but not one of the bitterist... and a fucking good song :D

Tebus: Yeah, its a fucker of a song... I became addicted to it after their London gig...

Can silence be shared?
Can the perception of silence
fit into the frame which is to represent
the unity for which we stand
The confines representing a timeless sacrifice
No eye can of silence tell lie.
