ITT, Firefox users get rid of all the ads on UM

Let me tell you why you are an ass Erik. The ads help to supplement paying for this new server so I don't have to listen to your bitch ass whining about the site being down, etc. etc.. They are minimal and no big deal and have helped towards the server this month significantly. Thanks, appreciate it.

haha

man these were the days

Reduce the amount of RAM Firefox uses for its cache feature

let me guess youre using windows vista and wondering why the hell your computer is still slow even with 2 gigs of ram so you're clutching at straws trying to put the boot down on insignificant shit like firefox ram caching

meanwhile i'm running a full desktop environment with firefox and a bunch of tabs open in 95 megs because there are operating systems that just dont suck

Guessed wrong.

Windows XP. 504mb of RAM. PC runs fine.

I figured some people would like to have their browser run at maximum potential, hence why I posted that info. 504 mb is perfect for online browsing, dling, and other basic operations. I don't wish to play 4 fucking pc games simultaneously while running PowerShop Pro Collector's Edition 8.1. Hell!

you would have 512 not 504

but either way i was just being a silly willy

LOL @ Jerry's post!
Ftr, I have 512 mb and I would think that itd be sufficient but it's not. Its slow as fucking molassas, especially after loading Norton Internet Security 2009 on it today, which by the way, did nothing to rid my computer of all its fucking viruses and malware.

Actually, thats not going to improve your browsers performance, if anything it will make it worse, the exception being that you've got a full firefox cache and enough porno video rolling to fill your memory up and then its then having to page shit in and out of the harddrive.

Otherwise all it will do is reduce your browsers effect on the rest of the system.

Norton Internet Security 2009

Norton is a virus. McCaffee is almost as bad or worse, they alternate.

Try one of the many superior free ones(avira, avast, whatever), or pay for NOD32(considered to be the best, and most efficient out there by many).

He could be speaking of available system memory shown in windows, which could end up at 504mb due to an integrated GPU hogging some memory.

So many people bag Vista, i've been running Ultimate 32bit for about a year now and have not had a single issue. Sure it uses more memory than XP does but on my machine its not an issue and I personally can't stand using XP anymore, I was duel booting for a while and ended up wiping the xp partition. Windows 7 looks like it should fix the performance issues, a mate of mine is running beta on an xp specced laptop and he said it runs as well as XP does.

8 mb vram hmm well i suppose it's possible

vista sucks -- nowhere, however, did i say xp does not also suck

also i have been around long enough to not be fooled by microsofts betas
the betas are ALWAYS fast, the final retail versions are ALWAYS slower than the last os, without fail
this has been the case at least since the chicago beta (windows 95) and it will be true the next time around

i've been using linux since 1997 so i dunno, having to use windows at this point feels like surgery with no anaesthesia (feel the knife pierce you intensely)

i have it dual booted with windows though because i need to use photoshop and cubase -- but it is windows 2000, one of the two tolerable windows versions (the other one being nt 4)

i use vista on an extremely fast computer at work and it absolutely fucking BOGGLES THE MIND how it can take 5 seconds to delete a 10 kb file! file operations are fucking laughably snail paced and that whole thing where the screen blacks out for sometimes several seconds every time you need to do something that requires "admin access" is so braindead it makes me want to cry

oh and i love how they removed the ability to use wildcards to filter filenames in the open/save dialogs and how they removed the "last modified" column by default and made it almost impossible to have it back permanently -- thanks for making everything MUCH less useful than it was in windows 95

Out of curiosity, what in the world are you fellas doing on these computers? How many Fourier analyses do you need to calculate at once?
In my 49857348925 years of using a computer I've never had any issue aside from not having enough RAM and/or various viruses, and that's occured only within the past year or so.

here's me

never had a virus or any other problems (well once i had a virus in one file back when i ran PC-DOS 7.0)

i always think about this! my dad still goes through like three brand new desktop PCs a year even though he sees that I just take the "broken" ones and use them forever!

Mine's been slogging along since circa '03.
512 MB RAM. I'm pretty sure I upgraded once already so it probably had 256 to begin with. I threw another 256 in to play Sim City and it didn't make a dent in that fucker.

memory is so dirt cheap now, there really is no reason why you should not have 2gb minimum ... 40 bucks is worth the time wasted waiting for apps to open
