i've decided to devote my life to the lord

Okay, so here's the problem with Christianity (and more broadly, religion in general). The only "source" available is the Bible, which is FULL of contradictions and a bunch of petty bullshit about sacrificing cattle, as well as promoting slavery, child abuse, rape, etc. Claiming that God (a supposedly PERFECT being) wrote the Bible is obviously flawed and not a valid argument.

One of the main reasons religion exists at all is that people need answers to the mysteries that they see. The Catholic Church used to torture and execute those who considered that a force besides God might be responsible for the physical world. But as the Church gradually admitted that no, the sun does not revolve around the earth, it became acceptable to state that natural laws were governing the planet. I think that eventually, the evidence will be undeniable, and many will either abandon religion or use it only as a moral code.

Speaking of which, Christians are no more moral than atheists and I hate hearing that more than anything. Christians follow blindly, and if you're taught to question, you're still following but now you get a false sense of control over your understanding. Those without religion choose their own values, and if we choose to act like "good" people it's because we really want to, not out of the fear of some eternal punishment.

And I do see the need for religion as a sign of weakness. Kind of like people who need to be in relationships all the time. They're not confident in their ability to be themselves or in this case, to attempt to understand the universe without somebody else's help.

I am an ATHEIST, not an agnostic. There is zero proof to support the existence of any sort of God. I can't believe in something that not only has no evidence, but has no claims that can even be tested. And that's why it's utterly ridiculous to claim that Creationism is science. Christianity presents two options: believe that an omnipotent diety created the universe, or don't. Science is not stagnant like that. It acknowledges that it is not perfect, but only the best understanding humanity has at this present moment. Why should I be open to the possibility of a God? Because a lot of people think that one exists?

I'm not being closed minded, I'm drawing a conclusion based on the facts I see in the world. If I ever see any evidence that legitimately supports the existence of a creator or a higher being, then I'll consider being an agnostic.

Thank you for typing what I wanted to say but was too lazy to do <3

If god can see everything can he see why kids love the taste of Cinnamon Toast Crunch?

Brilliant!

I have moved beyond atheism, and have now adopted Apatheism: I don't give a shit if there is a God.

Yup. Count me in.

This thread went from 3 stars, to 1 star, to 5 stars (thanks to david and derick for saving the day), and then a downhill plunge back down to 1 star. I hope you guys are happy with what you have done.

Besides that one cowgirl (sorry, I forgot your name), are there any theists that post on this board? Just curious to hear what they have to say.

As nice sounding as the existential ideal of creating your own value system is, consider what drives most people to act according to social norms. The fear of eternal damnation is easily replaced by the fear of physical harm, imprisonment, financial penalties, social stigma, etc. Any sort of stable society relies largely on the majority of people conforming to an agreed upon behavioral norm, and all systems of law are built up to enforce that norm.

haha, boy, good stuff....ready for my 2 cents?

i go in and out of phases where i don't care about religion, and phases where i do. right now, i can't stand the shit, i'm so fucking tired of it.

i'm going to go ahead and say it, most religious people are fucking retards, you can him and haw about "not alllllll religious people are retards" yeah, no shit, of course there are exceptions to the rule, but most of them are fucking nuts jobs, and out of the ones that aren't stupid or nut jobs, many people are just lazy minded and/or scared out of their fucking mind that when they die they'll receive punishment. so they "believe" just in case.

i grew up in a church where there were nerf wars, events, pin ball machines that didn't require money etc. etc. etc. these are the same tools that pedophiles use. in order for these people to ejaculate their beliefs on you and in turn have you come back to church as an adult with an income and drop money in their coffers they have to at least plant that seed of fear before or after they let you loose in their "fun" environment.

i worked as a bouncer in a local bar for a while, and i thought it was hilarious to see all the people in the bar saturday that i used to see in church sunday. yet, there they were, getting loaded and gyrating on the dance floor and trying to get laid just like all the other sinners and heathens they think are going to be punished for doing the same thing.

another hilarious observation i've noticed is some "christian" chicks are usually the first one to dole out a blow job or jerk a guy off, they're religious because they're ashamed of their sexuality. but they like taking a load on the face more than the next girl, but they try to fight it.
