Derek I'm curious about your opinion of High Tension, I absolutely loved it

The French horror movie? It was called something else here, but I can't quite remember what.

I loved it too. It's not all that original, but the quality of the whole piece, never mind its living up to its name and more, makes it one of my favourites. It's a pretty awesome movie, really. The cinematography is accomplished Aja made a pretty brilliant horror, as they go.

Was it not dubbed in the U.S? I liked the language1 version with subtitles alot, so I dunno if it was impacted in any way by the dubbing (which I'm usually against). I do know it was trimmed in the U.S so it could be released, and I have the DVD somewhere, which has the full version on it, so it's worth buying/renting if you only saw it at the cinema.

edit: Switchblade Romance was the UK title.

We got it in subbed in theaters here, however it was actually the opposite with the US Theatrical release, it was the longer cut.

A while later I watched a DVD of it, which turned out to actually be the original edited cut, and there were several minutes worth of gore, decapitated headsexing, et al, not present. As a result I found out the plot itself did not make the story compelling, but all the gore. Completely fell flat. A shame.

Hmmm. Dubbing is culturally backward, yet it still goes on in some countries like crazy.

Hmmm. I never saw the edited cut, but I assumed it wouldn't be as good. I agree with you, though, the plot is not instrinsically compelling, but the direction is.

quite, its a fascinating film to watch though. Something I don't believe he was able to replicate in The Hills Have Eyes (the only thing I think I've seen since)

on the topic of editing, I'm reading the wiki about how the edited cut WAS the one that was released in the US. Now I'm confused because I know I saw the scenes listed as being cut, and I know I've seen the edited version on DVD which does indeed lack these scenes. How odd!

I agree with you regarding the Hills have Eyes, it wasn't as good. As for the editing, I went and saw the movie because Berardinelli liked it when he saw it at the Toronto Film Festival, yet at the time the review came out it had no U.S distributor and he figured no-one would pick it up. He subsequently updated his blog when Lionsgate picked it up but he was pretty clear that it only got released thanks to some heavy editing.

I've not really read anything since, but that's what I recall.

Via google I am finding very brief references to others having seen the unedited cut in US theaters, but it seems to have been a rare occurrence. I count myself lucky.

The edited version leaves out just enough of certain scenes to make you think "wait, what just happened?!" While I don't find gore a necessity, I feel the editing of these scenes left open some holes (in a film that had plenty of its own plot-wise to begin with) which could only manage to hinder the appreciation.
