Well i'm not able to explain it. If you speak in passé simple it will sound absolutely lame. But when you're writing something, there are moments when you don't have any alternative to passé simple.
The bourgeoisie uses passé simple when speaking, but never do so with a middle class frog like me or Mehdi, we would laugh at you
