HEY! LET US ALL TALK ABOUT JAZZ BECAUSE THAT MEANS IF YOU LISTEN TO JAZZ THEN YOU ARE AN ELITE MUSICIAN WITH ELITE TASTES!

YOU ARE ALSO AN ADVANCED HUMAN BEING.....WOW LOOK AT ALL THESE MAINSTREAM AND OBSCURE JAZZ NAMES I AM THROWING AT YOU I AM SOOOOOO OPEN MINDED AND COOL BECAUSE I LIKE JAZZ AND METAL, I RULE AND YOU DON'T. I MEAN EVEN THE MOST ADVANCED 'METAL' MUSICIANS CANNOT HOLD A CANDLE TO JAZZ MUSIC. AM I RITE OR WHAT?!

:)

But I really like jazz... Should I stop? Or maybe I should stop liking metal?

I don't think devotees of either genre tend to be very open-minded. This board is typically pretty cool, though.

@Procella: from Poland? Have you heard Lux Occulta?

Its no different than having a discussion about anyother type of music. If you dont like it, it doesnt make everyone else an elitist.... Being an Opeth fan does though! I was never bothered with music until Opeth.

Al Di Meola - Elegant Gypsy... #1 jazz album that everyone should have...

Return to Forever - Romantic Warrior
Charlie Hunter - anything...
Any Live Phish CD's will have tons of great jazz on there...

John Scofield - anything really... I find his newer stuff more accesible...

check him out on allmusic.com

Phish seems to get bashed in metal circles, but Trey is a freaking amazing guitarist. He hears amazing things and plays the hell out of them.

Its a shame... although their albums don't do them justice, they are one of the best bands ever...

Miles Davis
Herbie Hancock
John Coltrane
Dizzy Gillespie
Freddie Hubbard
Wynton Marsalis (some people don't like him, but I think he's great)

The two aren't mutually exclusive.. so yeah, it can be both, and I think in a lot of people's minds it is. You have a lot to share with the forum, but demeaning everyone because they don't understand that is probably not the best way to go about it :)

I've never dug very deep into Jazz. After all the recommendations in this thread, I'll delve into it a bit. My impressions of the genre were always that it was a method for musicians to express their superiority over others. It's certainly that way with Jazz musicians I know in person. But there's always been a soothing element to jazz which I've appreciated, so I hope to run into more ambient, relaxing style stuff.

I heard about them ;-). The problem is that for a long time I decidedly disliked black metal (and all other extreme kinds of metal). Now I'm beginning to discover that it isn't just noise, but you can find a lot of interesting souds in these styles. Of course there are a lot of things I haven't heard yet - because they used to be just uninteresting to me... But it is changing...

One of the strangest bands I've ever heard. BM, jazz, electronic (dare I say dance?). Not terribly cohesive, but an interesting listen.

What I know of John Zorn is seriously weird. The Cobra sessions are completely crazy improvs that he led. I don't think they always work. I have a soundtrack to an unfinished film by Walter Hill, and it's pretty scary. Haven't listened to it much since I got it about 10 years ago. I might like it more now.

Spillane and Naked City were, from what I remember, pretty cool. But you'll probably want to find out from someone who's heard those discs in like the last decade to be sure!

Sounds similiar to Italy's Ephel Duath (minus the dance/electronica, I think)....check them out if you haven't heard em.
