Jeff Loomis - Zero Order Phase!!

I just listened to the myspace song, holy crap. :OMG:

I am wondering how different/individual each song actually sounds though. If they are all that style of full shred over a somewhat bland backing track, I mean how individual can they be.................hopefully very. :D

Aaron are you able to elaborate on the gear/amp(s) used or is it a trade secret. I guess it may be if he didn't use ENGL amps.

:)

With all the "guess the amp" stuff that fooled most of us as well as the "i can make my 5150/XXX/Powerball/Rectifier/whatever hi-gain amp sound like my Rectifier/5150/XXX/Powerball/whatever hi-gain amp" it could be anything... 5150, XXX, ENGL PB/SE, Rectifier, ...

Would be good to know which amp it was exactly anyway.

About the drums sound i don't find it shocking... It sounds very good actually, the production in general reminds me a lot of Pissing Razors' "Fields of Disbelief" album.

Neil Kernon told that they used the ENGL SE EL34 for the guitars.

Sure ? No "Andy Sneap : i grabbed my ninja suit and reamped it through 5150 in secret" this time ? :) (i'm referring to the AILD "an ocean between us" thread and other stuff as well)

Good to hear the ENGL SE EL34 in action.

Where did you read this TomiR ? I checked the Neil Kernon forum and didn't find anything ? Do you know something about the rest of the signal chain ? (clean boost? cab ? settings ? mic ?)

Neil posts at sevenstring.org once in a while, and once asked about the gear:

"We used an Engl SE head with EL34s, and a number of guitars, all of them Schecter. The main one was the Jeff Loomis signature model with EMGs, but for certain things we used other guitars with passive pickups and also for different tunings and voicings etc."

Kiitos Hyvää !

I think it's very good in general. Not the best Loomis' tone IMO and the drum sound is just average, but the songs are killer and help in my "very good" rating.

The rhythm guitar tone on the album is just killer! It has a lot of similarities to the Recto tone he had on Dead Heart in a Dead World and EOR. I just love that tone!

I don't really like the drum tones... at all! Sounds way too artificial! But that's just my personal opinion.

I'm a bit torn. I find some of the riffs and progressions to be quite cool and certainly 'song-worthy' but the constant shred just tends to ruin it for me. I understand that's sort of the whole idea behind these virtuoso solo albums, but even so I wish the leads were a tad more musical.

The mix on the whole is not my cup of tea.

The reason why I love Buckethead's, Vai's, Gilbert's and John 5's instrumental (or semi-instrumental) records is because their playing is extraordinary, pushing borders, breaking conventions, giving inspiration - yet wrapped in well-crafted songs.

The reason why I like old Satriani records or John Petrucci's solo record is because they can substitute a lead singer really good with their melodies and keep my attention throughout whole songs or records - though they're not extraordinary by any of today's standards.

What I've heard from Jeff's record doesn't do neither... sadly.

The thing is: I LOVE his riffs in Nevermore but there are proportionally few solos stuck in my head. I do admire his technique, his riffs, his tone... but if anything, this record shows how important WD is for this band.

+1 here
The riffage is classic Nevermore, I wish the ideas were used for new Nevermore stuff. And as much as I adore Jeff's unique style and playing in general, he really overplayed on this one, it's simply too much for me...

When I say "the songs are killer", it's mostly because of the rhythm parts. I like the shredding, but at some point (early, I'd say) it tires me.

For sure. Some of those would've made some great riffs for the next Nevermore album. I hope now that Warrel and Jeff have their solo stuff out of the way, they can go back to focusing on the band (which, let's face it, as a collective is better then their separate efforts).
