Jeff Scott Soto Sydney Shows

The worst thing about this is that no other melodic rock bands will tour now because of the poor turnout for Jeff... :(

No, it's just that hardly anyone has heard of Jeff. I strongly doubt melodic rock bands the world over will say, "No way man, Jeff Scott Soto couldn't draw a crowd so what chance do we have??".

they guys responsible for this tour are working on a Tuff/Dangerous Toys tour next year and i have spoken to Stevie Rachelle and he is really looking forward to it even if it doesnt do well (i think all he cares about is selling another Tshirt :p )

In the melodic rock world Jeff is massive, everyone knows him, so other bands in the same genre are hardly going to go "Well, Jeff, who everyone knows, didnt do well, but im sure we will" are they? :)

Well then those bands are stupid for thinking that just because they know who he is, that everyone here knows who he is. :)

Which melodic rock bands are you talking about exactly? I'm referring to those who at least one in ten people have heard of.

Yes but those are bands from the 80s im assuming, im talking bands like Ten, anyone on Frontiers records and bands like that...

The Queen night was poorly attended but the funny thing is that the crowd were more awake than the twice as large following the night after. You could have heard a pin drop between some songs on night 2. I don't know where some of the punters got their valium, but a little more excitement for a rare gig like this wouldn't have been out of place. The guy is singing really well and he brought a very capable band with him.

I spoke with Jeff for a while after the second show and he was quite philosophical about it all really. He was grateful for every person that went. But me personally, I think that any melodic rock fan that would turn down seeing a gig like this because it was on Wednesday or Thursday is a pussy. :)

For those who didn't know, Jeff's better half is from Sydney so he's been here before but had been dying to bring the band with him and play some shows. Andrew from MR did a brave thing in putting it together and I commend him for it.

If JSS can't pull a crowd here, no other melodic rock bands will. He is pretty much the top of the pyramid for melodic rock. The man has sung for Yngwie Malmsteen, Axel Rudi Pell and Talisman, three of the biggest groups in the AOR/melodic hard rock scene, as well as on VERY highly respected & regarded albums such as Eyes, Humanimal, Kuni, and tons more, plus successful solo albums and the Rock Star soundtrack. He is just about as big as you can get as far as melodic rock is concerned these days.

In 2002 when he played the Gods festival, his set was the one that stole the show and had everybody talking and he upstaged the two co-headlining bands Harem Scarem and Hardline easily. In fact, Harem Scarem's set was awful so that wasn't hard to upstage... haha. But Jeff was the man everybody was talking about!

Seriously, does any else know who he is? I mean, I've at least heard of those bands Trent mentioned earlier, as well as a lot of the other names that have been thrown around in this thread, but I wouldn't know JSS if he came up to me and said "Hi, I'm JSS". The only place I've *ever* heard about him, is in this thread, and there was possibly another one about him a while ago.

Now, I admit, I'm possibly not the greatest fan of Melodic Rock going around, nor do I pay a whole lot of attention to things that don't really interest me, and yes JSS has an amazing voice and maybe I should check out some more of his stuff (I listened to some samples on his crappy website after reading this thread. Yes the man can sing, but he can't spell for nuts), but I didn't even really know he was a friken singer a little while ago.

I'm sure other *known* bands would pull a bigger crowd. Not that I really care, I wouldn't go anyway :)

There are no other *known* bands in the melodic rock genre though, thats the point :)

Unless you are talking bands that were huge in the 80s or something and now play clubs or whatever, but otherwise, nobody knows any of them :)

Melodic rock doesn't have a strong fanbase in Australia, thanks to the snobbery of the industry. How many times have you heard stuff like Journey on the radio, for example, or met someone outside of a group like us who even know who they are?
That's not to say there aren't people who are into it, because there is. But apart from his work on 'Rock Star', I really only know Soto's work from his time with Malmsteen, and that was in the mid-80s. More people may have gone to these shows if they had been promoted better though. I offered to play some of his songs on my radio show and the promoter was going to mail me some mp3's, but he never did.

It's not till next week Sydo :) 14th and 15th heh.

Spwany is right Phloggy. The point is that there are really no well-known melodic rock bands these days because its not a style of music that gets any attention anymore. People who are into melodic rock know who JSS is and would definitely go, and people that aren't into it wouldn't go anyway.

So the point is, that as I said, if JSS can't sell well, no other melodic rock band will because he is among the most known in the scene. It just gets no exposure here.
