Job interview at Music Store tomorrow - what should I know ?

Sounds like you've already got a head start, since the usual music store summer employee can't

1) pick up the instrument cable of correct length, even if it's written on huge letters on the package
2) actually acknowledge that you're in the store, trying to talk to him
3) recognize the difference between the kind of drum skins you hit with the stick and the kind you don't
4) stop playing CoB riffs on the combo that just arrived this morning, so you're shit out of luck if you need any help.

I'm pretty sure the manager doesn't care if you know all the little bits of trivia information on saxophones, he's probably fine with someone who has a good basic grasp of things and is actually a nice person.

- Don't be afraid to admit that you don't have the answer to a question... eventually someone will know that you're full of shit
- Don't jam out at work all the time like a douche

And +1 to Chryst, it's really no different than any other retail job, just a little more fun since you have interest in what you're selling

Yeah, considering most people employed at these places sounds like you are overqualified.

I work at a music store. I have to admit I mostly just sit on my ass all day (when there's nothing that should be done of course..), it's a small shop though.

You seem to know a fuckton and i'd be surprised if you didn't get the job man :) Mainly as the others stated is to be a good salesman, it's just that. Most people will just go "oh hai can u plz restring my geetar i r returded", you also have the old dudes asking about an ancient guitar, if you have it in stock, and then he'll proceed to babble on about what guitar he got and his entire life story.

So yeah in short, salesman and basic maintenance on instruments is really all that is needed.

Oh and hope that you won't get a druggie in the store that goes around to try a harmonica (before you can say no) and being relieved that his card worked after 15 minutes of trying insert the damn thing.

^Oh trust me you'll get to tune alot of guitars, and you will get a hatred for cheap guitars where the neck always comes back fucked because of bad use :)

You'll nail it dude, personally I think you're going a bit overboard with the knowledge  But hey it's all good!

"sir you're going to have to buy some of these Elixir strings to go with that guitar, and you will also need a polisher and cloth, and oh I can throw in an extra Mesa Mark V just because it's you..."

Don't forget about cross-selling.

Thisthisthisthis.

Anyone can make a sale; a proper salesman will suck all the fucking money out of your wallet and you won't even realise it until you get home.

In the past couple of years most of the big-name music stores here in WA have shifted to paying on comission. The only major store I know of that isn't running on comission exclusively employs pushy opinionated assholes. So you're pretty much bang on!

Finally the interview is done. The two managers asked me questions for a good 20 minutes, some that I was not expecting and not really prepared (I pretty much studied a little on the instruments to refresh myself more than about situations), like "what do you do if a person yells at you" or if an employee steals, or if the manager wants to do something and I don't agree. I said, i'll tell the customer to chill out we can talk and see the positive, I'll tell the manager about the stealerso he checks his cameras and if he wants to do something I'm not gonna argue decisions but I'll tell my reasoning behind an idea if I get one for improvement..

I think it went good somehow, I told them I was more interested in adjusting the instruments than playing them because I only play my own, and level up in skills for tuning up and repairs..

Will have the answer monday as they had other candidates interviewed..
Sounds good man!
One final thing, they asked if I was more a saleman or a conselor and I said probably a counselor because I want to sell things I know are worth and useful so that customer comes back happy and trustful.
Uh oh... :D If they're dicks you chose the "wrong" answer, haha

Your co-worker sounds like every guitar store employee ever. Think they know everything, act like they are Yngwie,Vaughan,Zappa , but cant play and dont even know the basics of setting up guitars.

There are some real dickheads in music shops in Australia too mate, dont worry. Just make sure you are the guy who the older dudes go to, they are the ones with the real cash.

(Although I will say in Japan I have yet to see a staff member jamming away or wasting time, they have always been super professional and treat me the same regardless of what Im buying.)
