Joining The Military?

Ugghh, I knew it was inevitable something like this would rear it's head

yea, but lets just ignore that shit and stick to the actual question. I guess what he really needs is firsthand experience from an officer. cuz most people i know are enlisted men.

Hey guys thanks for the responses and my apologies for not putting this in the off-topic section. Yeah, I completely aware of some of the sacrifices that might have to be made. The guy I know was sent to Germany and then The Netherlands right out of training. He said the Iraq aspect might be the only negative side to joining but it does have many great benefits. I'm still trying to decide what branch to join. I could move to San Antonio and get into a school that has an Air Force program or stay here and do the Army program. I'm still trying to get more info on commissioned officers, so if anyone has any helpful info, I'd appreciate it. Thanks.

Do you have the grades?

This is indeed in the wrong section. But here is my advice: Do not join the army for money. I am not saying don't join up. The people I ran into in the army that were most displeased were the ones that joined up for money or the GI bill. The happy ones joined because they wanted to fight.

Oh yeah the 2nd Lt. out ranks all enlisted men in theory only. Pity the green officer that gets in the way of a 1st Sgt or Sergeant Major. And guess what if there aren't any witnesses it’s not so uncommon for a staff sergeant at the motor pool to say fuck off you're not getting shit.

I think if you want to join up for benefits and what not you should join the air force. Very few people in the air force are actually pilots. You could get a job with very little chance of danger. I am not picking on you, its just being practical. Nobody needs somebody worried about student loans making decisions in a war. My company commander always looked completely confident, but eventually his hair started falling out in clumps from the stress.

It is really ironic that I read your post right now, because I just got done writing a check for the widows and orphans fund for my old infantry unit.

Yes sir. But honestly how many people do you think actually get degrees and go into the military? I'm not sure but it seems like a low number to me.

Yeah I wouldn't be joining the military for just the money... I know I would end up hating it. hehe I'm thinking about the Air Force right now but it's a big decision I'm gonna have to make here pretty soon. Thanks man!

If you have a college degree you start off as a commissioned officer. Non commissioned officers must work their way up from enlistment. You can either join ROTC and complete your training on a college campus or go to OCS with a degree. This is information coming from a former commissioned officer who is did exactly what I'm considering.

Here is some extra info for you, as explained to me by a Lt. I had in korea. If you join the army with a college degree to be an officer you go to basic training, then to officer school, and if you don't pass officer school your still in the army. Then you just have to finish out your time as enlisted starting as an E4. He said he had I guy in his class that had that happen. But you'd have to be a complete fuck up to fail most army shcools.

 Yeah that's what my buddy was telling me. As I mentioned earlier you go to officer school OCS if you don't take ROTC on a college campus. There is another school (which you might be referring to) which teaches you about the specific field you choose to pursue. I'm going to talk to the Officer in charge of the ROTC program at the university here sometime this week. I've been told it's a lot of leadership skills that are covered in the training that determine if you pass. I'm sure it would be different for each specialized field though. Good info. Thanks!
