what's the best death metal distortion around? I've tried metal zone, zoom, digitech and a crate amp head so far ...but I'm just looking for something better ...any suggestions?

well, ive used the zoom 5051 distortion, and that sucked ass. after that i moved up to the ibanez "stomp box" distortion and it was definitly a step up. it was more of a fuzz than anything else. and now my current pedal, the digitech "death metal" pedal is very badass. give me a more description of what you used for pedals, because just with those company names i dont know what pedals youve used, therefore i cant give you sufficient advice. my marshall mode 4 distortion is fucking unreal as well. the only thing that sucks is its a solid state, not a real tube amp

well am metal zone from BOSS...the zoom is actually the one you were using and yes it's a piece of junk lots of feedback no matter what pick ups you use...Crate GLX1200H wich is an amp head...and the digitech well I can't remember what was the name to it...but it's pretty much alike the zoom..

there is not ONE best one. it depends on what you want.

classic swedish death metal tone like on RTC you will get by plugging guitar-DS1-Metalzone-5150. (or first metalzone and then DS1 im not sure)

This have been talked about several times at this forum.
The "RTC sound" or Sunlight-Entombed sound is really just the almighty
Boss HM-2 pedal into a marshall tube amp:kickass:

actually, the digitech death metal is very impressive. its a little fuzzy, but its a very solid distortion pedal. i mean i dont know, everyone likes different pedals, but out of all the ones ive used over the years, this pedal has served me the best.

no distortion is better than a mesa boogie dual rectifier amp distortion. but then again, im sure many people would tell me otherwise. the best advise i could give you is go to a guitar store, fucking try them all out and see which one works best for your taste.

After some years working with sound engineering and even more years playing guitar I have some tips, that I would have appreciated back then.

Before looking for a distortion, you should consider the purpose of your distorted sound. Do you want to use it in a band situation live or in rehearsal space? Then get something that fits that enviroment, it could be either a nice amp with a even nicer cabinet (I need to stress the importance of a nice cabinet) in which case the amp provides the distortion. It could also be combos between amp and analogue distortion pedals. I've actually went the Opeth-way with my livesound at the moment and use a Boss GT-6 plugged directly to the power-amp of my amplifier (past Eqs and all that) and blistering out through my vintage 30 speakers, but thats just my prefered rehearsal/live metalsound.

If you're not looking for the live deal, you might need to re-consider the equipment. I remember in the early days I always tried to find a distortion so chunky it could re-create the sound of a full metal band, with bass and kick and all that. Which is of course impossible. You'll have to get the feel of just the guitar and try to opt that. For a cheap sollution, get a semi-pro soundcard (ca 100 dollars) and try Guitar Rig, and fool around with presets. Can do wonders in simpler recordings.

Hope any of this shit will help, you'll find your own distortionsound in time.
