just a question..

i used to have the smash box by ibanez. meh it was more of a fuzz pedal if you ask me. it was alright, ive had a few ibanez pedals in my day, and let me tell you i was never that impressed with them.

Engl amps.

Also, I've noticed a lot of local death/grind bands i've seen use Mesa Boogies or Peavey 5150/6505's with some sort of overdrive pedal.

Engls are nice. But a 5150 will give an awesome tone. If you want some extra crunch or something an od pedal would definitely give it to you. Overall though, the 5150 is where its at.

Line 6 amps. You don't need pedals, they have the best sound for metal. Period.

Worst fucking advice I've ever heard. Fucking hell.

When I plug my Gibson Les Paul, B tuning, into my Hughes & Kettner Triamp, with the distortion channel's master on 10 (so I control the volume with the general master) I get the heaviest sound on earth. I've had this Triamp modified a bit though.
I've also got a Hughes & Kettner Warp distortion pedal. It's the best distortion pedal considering its price (20 bucks!!!), and combined with a good amp with a good clean channel, it's brutal as hell too.

I still can't believe some people would advise Line 6 products... The only awesome thing they ever made is the DL-4

Beleive what you wish. But if anybody is looking for a heavy sound with high end also and admittingly the top favorites for recording processes from bands such as Behemoth, Death, Arch Enemy etc, then grab yourself a line 6. Price is good and the sound even better.

i prefer the peavy rage 158 amp distortion because it sounds like a half ton truck running over a pile of dead babies. NOW THATS BRUTAL!

(joke)

I have the boss mt-2 Metal Zone, I think the full name is. With a clean amp tone, I can get a great death metal tone. the key is finding out how to use that pedal. There are 6 different switches on that thing...
